For this assignment students had to use graphite to render three all white spheres without the use of contours, they had to show a highlight, core shadow, indecent light, and cast shadow. This year was a little more successful than last year, I added a worksheet, tried to show or at least give them more direction. Still didn't get 100% out of them. They got close, and some of them did get better than what I expected with each attempt. I have to find a more rigorous or strict way of doing blending to get it across to them. They get so close, some of them are just at the cusp of a breakthrough or have the idea but not all the steps. Teaching for mastery here would work, it would just be incredibly frustrating. Since this is such a necessary thing, I'm not sure what to do, I'd almost have to do just as many tight controlled drawings as I would expressive mark making drawings.
My student's are so irreverent of what is considered a polished drawing or study. God forbid if the Salon existed in the U.S., their drawings would never make it in, not for lack of skill but for simply being so silly.
This student, Katie, improved rather well between drawings. The one on the right is her's as well.
