Students had three choices: the abstract value scale, the sphere, and the value scale worksheet, and these are listed in order of popularity from most to least. This really spread the playing field, students sort of were all over the map, I was surprised by their choices. Most of them really took the tape and the abstract value scale, it is the easiest choice with the greatest room for creativity and they kind of did more than I expected. What sucks is the tape sort of tears the paper cause it's not too high a quality. I am not springing for the high end low tack tape, and the solution is rather simple although most students didn't dawn upon it until after the fact. You have to prep the tape by de-sticking it, just stick it to something else to get rid of the tack and then use it, then immediately take it off. Leaving it on the paper for a long time really ruins it.
When it's all said and done this is just a value scale, I'm not sure why some students take to it so personally. It's weird, I think its just the immediate payoff for a low and very simple execution. And I get that feeling it's just not the kind of art I make. Simple repetitions that collect into something complex, or ultimately a collection of more complex repetitions is the kind of art I like to make. Nothing against minimalism it just doesn't do it for me process wise.
