For this assignment students had to convey the three-dimensional nature of the human figure through the use of cross contours. It’s tougher than it looks, lines don’t really wrap convincingly, keeping things proportionate and consistent is tough, and on top of it all, details just look weird covered in cross contours. Students have plenty of challenges to overcome, and they did alright with it, better than expected in most cases seeing as I thought the concept would be easy but hard based on their previous performances with cross contours. For me this entire unit is just very straightforward, but I’m glad it’s not so obvious to my students because it forces me to rethink how I think about it. They have a way of surprising me with their confusion and then their intelligence; the little clicks into realization are all over parts of the next project. I’m also going to shorten this unit so that I can get into to choice units and the end of the year projects faster.
