Talent Agency- Drawing and Painting Fall '17
Arts in Context: Talent Agency is a 600 level course taught by Talent Agency co-founder and co-director Yvonne Buchanan providing Syracuse University students with hands on engagement with students in the Talent Agency program. Each undergrad taught a workshop with the help of grad students over the course of Talent Agency's Fall '17 school semester. Fridays were reserved for more drawing focused lessons, and Saturdays were specialty workshops focusing on sculpture, digital, painting, and photography.
Art for Non-Majors Drawing & Painting
This class is offered at Syracuse University's college of Visual and Performing Arts as an elective art class. The class is a mix of instructor and student driven instruction in the basics of drawing and painting.
Talent Agency- Summer '16 intensive
This is the Summer intensive for Talent Agency, I organized this curriculum with the help of my fellow grad student instructors. This was the first summer we offered photography, we also went on several field trips, and the attendance was the highest it had been since the intensive's inception.
Welcome to Talent Agency, I'm going to try my best to develop your skills in painting and get you ready for college! This is the first year I taught at Talent Agency, it was a mix of various painting lessons for a wide variety of skill levels and students in the Syracuse city area.
Below is a list of the art classes that were taught by me, Mr. Turek, at FHS from 2011-2015. These will remain here until I need to use this curriculum. All of the links and info should be as it was, if you would like access to that info and it is not there, please contact me at joseph.turek3297@yahoo.com.
You need to take and pass Design 1 and Design 2 with a C average or higher in order to take any of the upper division courses such as Ceramics, Jewelry, or Drawing & Illustration. Design 1 & 2 are taught by me, Mr. Turek, and Mrs. Setterstrom and the class is designed to be an introduction to basic design concepts and techniques. You do not need any prior art experience in middle school but it is recommended. Design 1 is only offered first semester and Design 2 is only offered second semester. If you miss either semester of Design you will need to take it before you take an upper division course, talk to your counselor or Mr. Turek and Mrs. Setterstrom if you are having difficulties.
Comp Arts/Photo is a graphic design class. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it. You will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in this course. It is recommended that students who take this class have some familiarity with, or affinity for, computers. It is also recommended that you use your own digital camera for the class. Digital cameras will be provided but they will be used mostly for photography, there is very little 'video' or 'film' taught in this course. If you want to do real film related classwork take Broadcast Journalism with Mr. Connors.
Drawing is a great class to learn how to draw and/or sharpen your observation skills. A majority of the first semester is spent learning drawing techniques and approaches, the second semester focuses on creative/experimental approaches to drawing. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it.
Painting is a great introduction class to media and process of painting. Learn how to stretch canvas, use watercolors, and lots of other cool stuff. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it.
Ceramics
Ceramics is taught by Mrs. Setterstrom and is a wonderful class if you’ve never made anything out of clay. Learn to throw on the wheel, hand build, coil build, make and build with slabs, and a whole host of other techniques. Students will also get to glaze their wares and participate and make bowls for the Annual Empty Bowls charity dinner. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it.
Jewelry
Jewelry is taught by Mrs. Setterstrom and is an excellent class if you want to make anything with metal. Learn how to solder, shape and finish metals, and a whole host of standard jewelry making processes and techniques. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it.
Sculpture
Sculpture is by far one of the most unique classes offered in the department, it is taught by Mrs. Setterstrom. You’ll tackle tape sculpture, wood, wire, and tons of other materials while making massive sculptures. Most high schools do not offer a class such as this so take advantage of it! You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it.
AP Art
It is recommended that students taking AP Art have extensive experience with the fine arts. Mrs. Setterstrom teaches AP Art. You need to pass Design 1 & 2 with a C or higher to take it. It is also recommended that you pass at least one or two other upper division courses before taking it. That’s not to say it’s not fun, in this class you will develop your own style and create a portfolio of artwork to submit to the AP College Board for potential college credit. Please discuss your intention to take AP Art with Mrs. Setterstrom or Mr. Turek to see if you are ready to take it.
