MONUMENTS AND INTERESTING PLACES
The Empire State Building is a 102-story skyscraper located in Manhattan, New York City. It has a roof height of 1,250 feet. Its name is derived from the nickname for New York, the Empire State. In 2001, the Empire State Building became the highest building in New York (although it was no longer the tallest in the US or the world). In 2012, when the new One World Trade Center was built, The Empire State Building became the third-tallest completed sky scraper in the United States and the 22nd-tallest in the world.
The Empire State Building is generally thought of as an American cultural icon. It has been named as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. Over the years, more than thirty people have committed suicide from the top of the building. The Empire State Building was the first building to have more than 100 floors and it cost $40,948,900 to build.
Times Square is a major commercial intersection in Midtown Manhattan. At 42nd Street, where cross Seventh Avenue and Broadway , we can found this fantastic place, another of the scenariosthat we should not miss in New York.It is quite spectacular the concentration of neon signs that have repeatedly been immortalized in movies and on television news. It is one of the typical images of the city. From this point, going by any street that crosses the square, we can find really shocking decorations full of illuminated signs: On Broadway, the musicals and theaters; at 42nd Street, countless shops and restoration’s places, as the seventh avenue (also called the Fashion avenue).

You can also practice rock, climbing, ice skating and you can find and the Central Park Zoo. Each summer, the Public Theater presents free open-air theatre productions, often starring well-known stage and screen actors. The national monument is a gift from the people of France to mark the American Centennial. In 1984 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the United States. It opened at the beginning of the 2009 MLB season as a replacement for the team's previous home, the original Yankee Stadium, which opened in 1923 and closed in 2008. The ballpark opened April 2, 2009, when the Yankees hosted a workout day in front of fans from the Bronx community. Much of the stadium incorporates design elements from the previous Yankee Stadium, paying homage to the Yankees' history.

CHARACTERS:
In this book different characters, both protagonists and secondary characters, appear. Here they are:
1- MAIN CHARACTERS:
- Antonio: He is the main character. He is a young boy that likes travelling around the world. He studied journalism and English at the Salamanca´s university and now he is working for a travel magazine, where he writes different articles about his travels and his most successful adventures.
Last year, we got to know him in his trip to Britain and this year he will be travelling to New York, where he will visit many places and learn about this country. In the book Antonio makes two trips to New York.
- Jason: He is a main character of the book. Jason and Antonio had become close friends and they both loved movies. Our favourite movie director was Woody Allen and the city that we both really wanted to see was New York. Most of Woody Allen's movies are set there. They often talked about their common friends in Salamanca. They shared a lot of the same interests, for example the magical and special city that appeared in Woody Allen's movies. Another interest they shared was travelling. He had even written a book.

- George: He was from New York and worked as the chief editor of the arts and leisure section for The New York Times, the city's most prestigious newspaper. He told me that he was returning from visiting a friend who lived in Madrid. We talked for the rest of the flight and he told me a lot of interesting things about New York that weren't in my guidebook. Antonio told him that he really appreciated all the information George gave him, and said that he wanted to feel what it was like to live in New York and to meet real New Yorkers. George laughed.

Antonio is a Spanish guy who likes travelling and always has wanted to visit New York. A Foreigner in New York tells us how he gets the chance to visit New York twice. While you are reading it you know about tourist routes, famous places, the way of life in New York… And when you finish it you want to take the first flight to New York!
Here, I am going to talk about the most famous places in New York:
1. THE STATUE OF LIBERTY AND TWO ISLAND (Liberty Island and Ellis Island):
The Statue of Liberty is on an island in New York harbor called Liberty Island. There’s a ferry service that takes tourists there from the southern tip of Manhattan. New York harbor is enormous and the Statue of Liberty stands majestically in the middle of it. The Statue of Liberty was the first thing that immigrants saw when they came to the United States, many of them cried with emotion when they saw it. The Statue was a gift from the French government in 1876 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the USA. The only thing that the city of New York had to do was to build the pedestal for it. However, there was an economic recession at the time and few people wanted to spend money on it. The arm of the statue that holds the torch was brought to New York and placed in one of the squares in the city to promote the project.
It stayed there for five years until the decision was made to accept the statue and build pedestal. The statue was finally erected in 1886. The statue was designed by a French sculptor called Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi. He used his mother as a model for it and it took him 21 years to finish it. The interior structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel - the same man who later designed the Eiffel Tower-
Ellis Island is an island close to Liberty Island where the majority of immigrants, who came to America between 1892 and 1954, were processed. Now, it’s been converted into a museum. Here, there are audio-visual exhibits that explained the history of Ellis Island. Its busiest years were from 1892-1924, when the island received thousands of immigrants a day.
2. THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING
The Empire State Building is a skyscraper located in Midtown Manhattan at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street.
The Empire State Building is generally thought of as an American cultural icon. The Empire State Building was designed by William F. Lamb from the architectural firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon, which produced the building drawings in just two weeks, using its earlier designs for the Reynolds Building in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Carew Tower in Cincinnati, Ohio as a basis. The construction was part of an intense competition in New York for the title of "world's tallest building". Two other projects fighting for the title, 40Wall Street and the Chrysler Building, were still under construction when work began on the Empire State Building.
Perhaps the most famous popular culture representation of the building is in the 1933 film King Kong, in which the title character, a giant ape, climbs to the top to escape his captors but falls to his death after being attacked by airplanes.
3. CHINATOWN
Chinatown is the biggest Chinese neighborhood in the United States and the biggest concentration of Chinese people in the western world. There are about 150000 people living in an area of only two squares miles.
In China
town you can feel like you are entering a different country. The sing on the walls are all in Chinese and English. There are Chinese people, stores and restaurant everywhere. Along with the stores that sell souvenirs, there are also stores that sell imitation designer clothes, watches and bags. The food markets sell all kinds of Chinese sauces and spices as well as food and vegetables that look really good. These markets sell some of the best fish, fruit and vegetables in the city.
4. LITTLE ITALY
The neighborhood is full of Italian restaurants, cafés and food stores. Cafés make you feel like you was sitting in a café in Rome.
In September is the San Gennaro festival. San Gennaro is the patron saint of this neighborhood and it’s quite a party. There are people selling Italian food everywhere as well as music and dancing. They even have a procession through the streets with the bust of San Gennaro.
5. MADISON SQUARE GARDEN
In A Foreigner in New York Antonio went to Madison Square Garden when the Knicks game against the Nets. The atmosphere at the game will be like when Athletic de Bilbao plays Real Sociedad or Barcelona plays Espanyol.
The atmosphere in front of Madison Square Garden before the game is incredible. The arena is enormous; there are almost 20000 people at game. The introductions of the players are spectacular: all the lights go out, really loud music began to play and an exciting laser light show began. Each player run out onto the court as his name is announced. Once both teams are introduced, the regular lights came on again as the players got ready to begin the game.
Madison Square Garden is a multi-purpose indoor arena in midtown Manhattan in New York City. MSG hosts approximately 320 events a year. Many large music concerts in New York City take place in Madison Square Garden. Particularly famous ones include George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh, The Concert for New York City following the September 11 attacks, and John Lennon's final concert appearance before his murder in 1980.
6. CENTRAL PARK
Central Park starts on 59th Street. Central Park is a public park at the center of Manhattan in New York city. The park initially opened in 1857, on 843 acres of city-owned land. In 1858, Frederic Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won a design competition to improve and expand the park with a plan they entitled the Greensward Plan. Construction began the same year, continued during the American Civil war, and was completed in 1873. New York's Central Park is the first urban landscaped park in the United States. The park, which receives approximately thirty-five million visitors annually, is the most visited urban park in the United States.
Central Park and New York (1865) Central Park (Actually)
For New Yorkers Central Park is the ideal place to walking with children, sunbathing, playing sport. In Central Park there are lakes and meadows in the middle of the city, wooded areas, bridges, waterfalls… and other attractions.
In A Foreigner in New York, when Antonio arrive there in summer his friend said him that the best thing about New York in the summer is that there are so many free cultural events planned all over the city, like a free classical music concert performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in Central Park. Between 200,000 and 500,000 people go to this concert. It’s a very special event because the Philharmonic only plays twice there during the summer.
Many concerts have been given in the park including Barbara Streisand,1967;Bob Marley & The Wailers, 1975;Elton John,1980;Diana Ross,1983;Bon Jovi, 2008; Andrea Bocelli, 2011… But this is my favourite performance:
STRAWBERRY FIELDS
Strawberry Fields is a landscaped section in Central Park that is dedicated to the memory of the musician John Lennon. The entrance to the memorial is located on Central Park West at West 72nd Street, directly across from the Dakota Apartments, where Lennon had lived for the later part of his life, and where he was murdered.
It’s named after a famous Beatles song that John Lennon composed. Shortly after he died, the city dedicated this garden to him because he liked to spend time here. Countries from all over the world have donate trees or plants for this special garden. There is a circular area in the centre of the garden with a mosaic that spelled out “Imagine”, the title of Lennon’s most famous song. Lots of flowers and candles are placed on it.
Now, I'm going to tell you something interesting about the main characters:
Antonio: He is the main character. He is a young boy who has studied journalism and English at Salamanca University. His father is an American gentleman
Jason: He studied at Salamanca University like Antonio only for a year. There they became close friends. Later, he returned to Boston
University to finish his theatre studies. Now he is livig in New York and he is settled there. He has got an apartment and a regular job, but it's not an acting job. He is working as a waiter like every other unemployed actor, but the important thing is that he is living his dream.
and this is why Antonio is very interested in America. His job is about writing articles for a Spanish travel magazines. He really loves travelling around the world! One day he received a phone call from New York: it was his University friend Jason, who offered Antonio to visit him and to stay in his house in Manhattan.
You can also find some cinema celebrities in the book, like:
Woody Allen: Woody Allen is an American screenwriter, director, actor, comedian, author, playwright, and musician whose career spans over half a century. By the mid-1960s Allen was writing and directing films, first specializing in slapstick comedies before moving into more dramatic material
influenced by European art cinema during the 1970s. He is often identified as part of the New Hollywood wave of filmmakers of the mid-1960s to late '70s.
Antonio Banderas: He is a Spanish film actor, film director, film producer and singer. He began his acting career with a series of films by director Pedro Almodóvar and then appeared in high-profile Hollywood movies, especially in the 1990s, including Assassins, Evita, Interview with the Vampire, Philadelphia, Desperado, The Mask of Zorro and Spy Kids. Banderas played the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek sequels and Puss in Boots as well as the bee in the Nasonex commercials.
