A. Put the following statements into REPORTED SPEECH.

1. ”It isn’t so foggy today as it was yesterday”, I remarked.

2. “Nothing grows in my garden. It never gets any sun”, she said.

3. “I’m going away tomorrow, mother”, he said.

4. “I’ve been in London for a month but so far I haven’t had time to visit The Tower of London”, said Tim

5. “We have moved into our new flat. We don’t like it nearly so much as our last one”, said my aunt.

6. “If I press my ear against the wall, I can hear what the people in the next flat are saying”, he said.

7. The advertisement said, “If you answer the questions correctly, you may win ₤100”.

8. “My new house is supposed to be haunted, but so far I haven’t seen any ghosts”, she said (REWRITE THIS SENTENCE)

B. Put the following sentences into REPORTED SPEECH (Use appropriate introductory verbs).

1. ‘We are studying now, but in five minutes we’ll have a break,’ said the students.

2. ‘People say I won’t have any classes next Thursday because the students are going on strike’, said Mary.

3. ‘You can’t drive to Granada with this car. You’ll have to borrow your father’s’, said my mum.

4. ‘My elder brother would like to study Maths at university’, said John. ‘I don’t know why. He’s never been good at Maths when he was at the secondary school’.

5. ‘I’ve crashed my car into a tree because it was raining cats and dogs’, said my cousin.

‘You should drive more carefully when it is raining because roads are very slippery’, said I.

6. ‘We have studied English here for more than 5 years,’ said Ann. ‘This year we are going to begin with German’.

7. ‘I’m so tired of going to work everyday’, said your father. ‘Don’t worry. We are having holidays next month’

‘No, she isn’t. She went shopping half an hour ago.’

23. ‘Did you grow your own vegetables when you lived in the farm?’, asked the grandson. ‘Yes, I did, although your mother sometimes had to buy some fruit in the supermarket’, said the grandfather.

24. ‘What about revising the passive voice for the exam tomorrow?’ said the students. ‘No problem. But why don’t you have a look first at the list of irregular verbs’, replied the teacher.

25. ‘Could I have some more coffee, please?’, said the customer. ‘Of course. Shall I bring you some milk too?’, said the waiter.

26. ‘Would you like a ham sandwich?’, asked my aunt. ‘No, thanks. I’ve just had lunch and I’m not hungry at all’, I said.

C. Put the following sentences into DIRECT SPEECH with the appropriate punctuation.

1. She reminded me to bring my umbrella in case it rained and I said that I would.

2. He suggested going for a walk in the park, but I said it was too cold and wet outside for a walk in the park.

3. The teacher warned the students not to talk so loudly or he would to report it to the headmaster. The students apologized and said they were very nervous because they had a Philosophy exam the next lesson.

4. My grandmother offered me a glass of hot chocolate and biscuits, but I refused politely because I had just had lunch and I didn’t feel hungry at all. Anyway she insisted and I had to accept in the end.

5. William said that two days previously we had had an exam and that it was impossible that we had another exam that day. Peter advised me to revise my notes because everything was possible with their English teacher.

6. My mother told me that I always had to obey my father because he knew more about life than me and he wanted the best for me. I replied I knew that, but that he sometimes committed mistakes as any other human being.

7. He invited her to another pint of Guinness, but she suggested they should stop drinking because they had to drive home.

8. The police officer ordered the thief to raise his hands and not to move and he told him to calm down because he didn’t have any guns and he didn’t have the intention to run away.

9. The boy asked his mother for his English dictionary because he had been looking for it the whole afternoon and he couldn’t find it anywhere.

10. The nurse asked me politely to wait in the waiting room until the doctor finished with the previous patient and she called him.
