SUMMER for 1º Bachillerato students

SUMMER RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ENGLISH (Albert’s students)

Students in 1º BACHILLERATO

  • Those students who failed in June will have to take the September English exam. Therefore, once you have your individual report, you should revise very well all the lessons studied all along the year and the other aspects learned through the photocopies handed in. THE SEPTEMBER EXAM WILL INCLUDE THESE PARTS: GRAMMAR, USE OF ENGLISH AND A COMPOSITION, AND POSSIBLY A LISTENING or A READING & COMPREHENSION. There will be 2 options: an easy one just to pass and another a bit more complicated you can get a much better mark with providing that you have done all your compositions, projects, comments.....

  • Those students who have passed are advised to do some activities to prevent summer language attrition during these holidays not only to keep everything we have learned, but also to be ready for the SELECTIVITY EXAM, also bearing in mind that there is almost no third term in 2º Bachillerato:

- Revise what we have seen this year regarding the entry test. You can also do all the activities not done in the textbook or in the workbook. You can even get the textbook that we are going to have next year (Get Set 2, Oxford University Press) and start doing some activities. Have a look at the official list of textbooks. (A pen drive will be provided this June with all the material or YOU CAN SEND ME AN EMAIL ASKING ME FOR IT AND I WILL SEND YOU A LINK WHERE YOU CAN DOWNLOAD IT FROM) You should also remember that you've got hundreds of exercises in this site in NOTES ON GRAMMATICAL ISSUES AND MOCK EXAMS in the levels both of 1º bachillerato and 2º bachillerato.

- Work with the compulsory readers for 2º Bachillerato (also included in the list). As we will be doing dictations out of these readers, it is advisable to listen to them (some of them include a CD, but anyway everything will be included in the pendrive provided by your teacher now in June). You should also read them aloud to improve your pronunciation. If you read any other book of similar level, you can hand in a project or fill in the READER CONTROL SHEET you can find in Files), which will be taken into account for your final marks.

  • For A Foreigner in New York your project will be a tourist brochure with the best places and things to do in this city.

  • For the project on Jane Eyre you will have to write about Charlotte Brontë and her sister (you can also listen to the story in this post: Stop boozing for a while!!! ),

  • and for the project on The Adventures of Tom Sawyer you will have to write about Mark Twain (you can also make a comment in this post: Rascals are no longer just naughty boys ).

- For the writing skills and the compositions you will have to write next year I would advise you to make comments in my blog (I will send you an email with the corrections, as usual) or try to write a composition every two or three weeks (there are some good samples from other students in this site).

- It is important to read a lot about different topics to improve your understanding skill. You can use this Google site, my blog, other web links here included (for instance, newspapers in English), etc. Our vocabulary should get bigger and bigger (both passive and active vocabulary) to be prepared for the Selectivity exam at the end of the year.

- In this sense, it would be very convenient to use the online dictionaries you can look up in this site in order to work with definitions in English, synonyms, opposites… One of the most useful dictionaries at this level is wordhippo.

- In order to improve your listening skills, you can watch films in English, listen to pod casts, songs or do listening exercises (remember there are some useful web links here where you can do listening exercises online and then get your corrections).

  • OUR DIGITAL PROJECT : Our digital project >>>> Next year we will keep on developing our digital project not only for our subject, but also to any other subject you may need it.

  • Other recommended bibliography you can use, although I don’t find it indispensable:

- GRAMÁTICA PARA BACHILLERATO (Ed. Burlington)

- THE GOOD GRAMMAR BOOK (Ed. OXFORD)

- OXFORD PRACTICE GRAMMAR (Ed. OXFORD)

- HOLIDAY WORKBOOK for BACHILLERATO 1 / 2 (Ed. MACMILLAN/HEINEMANN)

- ENGLISH GRAMMAR ....with exercises (Bachillerato) Ed. LONGMAN

- GRAMMAR PRACTICE FOR INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS (Ed. LONGMAN)

- ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN USE (Ed. CAMBRIDGE)

WKEEP ON WATCHING SOME OF THE TV ENGLISH COURSES YOU HAVE GOT IN THIS SITE. I advise you to watch: New That's English series , Old That's English series and even FOLLOW ME, although this one may be too easy for you.

I will keep a record of all the things you do during the summer time in the SUMMER SCOREBOARD, and I promise all of them will be taken into account for the next school year.

AND REMEMBER THAT GOOD RESULTS IN THE ENTRY TEST WILL BE ESSENTIAL and taken into account!!!!!
