The Backstory
Kyle Holmes, a drama teacher at Granite Bay High School in California, noticed that students were feeling a lot of stress about their grades and getting into college. They were trying very hard, sometimes too hard. Several students were even studying during breaks between theater performances.
Composer-lyricist David Taylor Gomes, who worked with the drama program, saw how students felt an enormous amount of pressure to be the best and not disappoint the people in their lives. Inspired by what they saw, Holmes and Gomes created a musical called 'Ranked’.
This musical is set in a dystopian world where a student's class rank decides their future, and they would do anything to be at the top. The musical was being prepared for its first show at Granite Bay High School when the college admissions scandal became big news. This made their musical even more relevant.
‘Ranked' became very popular in high schools worldwide because it spoke to the pressures students feel. It was even going to have a performance in New York City, but it got delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. 《Ranked》
To make 'Ranked’, Holmes and Gomes talked to high school students and learned about their experiences and the pressures they faced. The students' stories showed that it is important to talk about important social issues like teen suicide and drug addiction.
The musical shows the real challenges that students face. In fact, the students themselves helped create it, with many of their stories and words becoming part of the musical. ‘Ranked’ wants to remind everyone to pay attention to the problems that young people go through in the education system.
The Plot
Ranked' is an exciting musical set in the near future where your school performance is the most important thing. The story follows Lily, a student who is just barely 'Above the Average' on the school leaderboards. If you fall 'Below the Average’, it means saying goodbye to your college dreams and more. Students are under a lot of pressure to be at the top.
In this world, some students are secretly paying to get better grades. They're trying to cheat the system and make their futures brighter. The musical introduces us to various students, including a very mean girl who holds the number one rank, a student who doesn't care about their rank, and another student who's struggling to improve their position.
All the characters are dealing with a lot of stress and competition. At the end of Act I, there's a surprising plot twist. We discover that one of the student's parents is paying to boost their child's grades, but the student has no idea about it. When this secret comes out, it puts everyone's future in jeopardy.
'Ranked' makes us ponder important questions: What gives us value? Who decides? And how do we cope when things don't go as planned? The musical combines the pursuit of good grades with difficult moral choices, giving us plenty to think about and discuss.
In a world where your school rank determines everything, 'Ranked' invites us to reflect on the meaning of success and the price we're willing to pay for it. The compelling narrative reminds us that the pursuit of success must not compromise our values or well-being.
SH/TAS Collaboration
This year marked the fourth time Sacred Heart High School for Girls has collaborated with Taipei American School. This activity provided a unique opportunity for G11 Global Learners (GL) to visit an international school and experience an English musical production first hand.
Before the activity, SH students watched a documentary titled ‘My So-Called High School Rank,’ about the making of the musical. They also learned several of the musical’s songs, such as ‘Come Up For Air’ and ‘Work Harder.’ After the performance, SH students received a back-stage tour and took time to interview the musical’s cast and crew.
他們也學習了一些音樂劇中的歌曲,如《Come Up For Air》和《Work Harder》。
To prepare for this collaboration, GL students composed interview questions. Some of the specific questions they asked their TAS counterparts included:
1
‘In the song, ‘Work Harder’ there is a line that says; ‘Just breathe, you’ll be fine.’ In the song, ‘Eye on the Prize’ the lyric reads; ‘Do what it takes to survive.’ Which one of these statements aligns more closely with your personal philosophy when it comes to your high school experience?
在歌曲《Work Harder》中有一句歌詞是:“Just breathe, you’ll be fine。”在歌曲《Eye on the Prize》中,歌詞是:“Do what it takes to survive。”
2
How would you personally define a successful high school career? What, in your opinion, are the key elements or achievements that make it successful?
3
How did you approach discussing your participation in the school musical with your parents, especially in terms of balancing it with other commitments such as maintaining your GPA? Did you need to negotiate or make any specific agreements with them regarding your academic performance?
Despite some initial shyness, SH students interacted confidently with TAS students, who are native English speakers. Upon returning to school, GL students compiled reports based on the information gathered from their interviews.
This activity was a hit! Many GL students commented that they felt inspired by the high quality of the TAS performance and that the story resonated with them and their own experiences as high school students in Taiwan. We eagerly anticipate future collaborations with Taipei American School, fostering ongoing inspiration and learning among our students.
