While most people know of Neil Armstrong and his historic first steps on the surface of the moon, not many know about the woman who helped put him there, Margaret Hamilton. Without her tireless efforts to write the computer code for the lunar lander, Neil would not have been the first human to walk on the moon. And Margaret is not the only woman who has had a lasting impact on the exploration of space and the technologies developed for it.
For their first project of the school year, the Grade 9 Global Learners learned about some of the amazing women who have helped increase our knowledge of what is beyond our planet. From Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to travel into space, to Katherine Johnson, one of the first African American women to work on NASA’s space program and whose mathematical calculations helped figure out the safest way to orbit the Earth, to Peggy Whitson, the first woman to command the International Space Station (twice!) and the holder of the most time in space for any American astronaut, they learned about some of the pioneering women in space exploration and how these women have been role models for the many who have come after them.
To share what they learned, the students were tasked with writing a short biography about one of the many women they learned about, describing her life and contributions to space exploration. They were also tasked with creating a diorama that reflected the working environment of the woman they chose to write about, showing the job and tools used by their subject. While the dioramas initially seemed somewhat challenging for the students, they rose to the challenge and did an excellent job coming up with some very creative and interesting dioramas. They also did great work on their biographies, creating concise but informative descriptions of their subjects and clearly showing not just how those incredible women furthered humankind’s knowledge, but how they showed to women around the world that anything is possible and that they too can reach for the stars.
