Keller Cats Cross the Line

By: Chris P.

Are you good at running? If you said you’re pretty good, then are you sure...are you really sure? Then prove it! If you joined cross country this year, then you accomplished the task. Cross country is a club where you run, race other people, get really good tips for pacing, and overall you just get better in general. Kids who are not that good at running could simply join this club and race for practice, and one day-BOOM-whoever joined this activity can potentially become a better sprinter. Seventh grader Colin M. said when he was interviewed, “I like running because I'm gifted at it.”

Another seventh grader Olivia G. stated that, “It’s really beneficial if you want to get better health.”

Some kids attend because it’s way more enjoyable than just doing chores. “It’s fun to run with friends!”, seventh grader Wiktoria R said.

Not only can it improve your pacing, but it can also allow you the opportunity to form relationships with new friends. Plus you could get physically fit because cross country is all about running, jogging, pacing and getting a good exercise in. Also, in closing out the cross country season, students became better runners than before they involved themselves with this club. I should know, they’re faster than me now. ^-^

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Strikes Back

By: Samuel G.

Mr. Aguilar teaches students defensive jiu-jitsu moves

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is about learning moves that can help someone to defend themselves against an attacker. Even if someone knows absolutely nothing about Brazilian jiu-jitsu , or how to perform any moves, eventually they will be able to perform these acts with ease. A club participant from Keller's Brazilian jiu-jitsu team who enjoys the sport said, “You can learn self defense. It can also be an active club. You don’t need any special skills to join the club; you only need to listen.” The final insight this student gave is, “Some of the moves you learn are serious; you can’t use them on any person unless you are in danger. Some moves teach you how to break free from an attacker; these moves are useful because they help you get out of a tough situation quickly.” With moves like these, someone can see why a student would like to join the school featured event run by Mr. Aguilar. There is always room for more participants, so check the schedule for the next meeting. Overall, the club is a fun and active one where anyone can use these moves to get away from a person who might want to harm them, and thanks to these skills, people can make sure that the attacker won’t want to mess with them again. They can use Brazilian jiu-jitsu to strike back!

In It to Win It!

The lead player is running down the court, the wind in her hair, determination in her eyes. “Wildcats! Wildcats!” cheers the audience. She lines up for the shot, she shoots, and…nothing but net! Another point for the Wildcats! This is what the Keller girls basketball team strives to do every week. While playing basketball is something the players love to do, they say that they still have a lot to work on. Seventh grade student Erin L. said that something the team wants to work on and improve is their aggression and not hogging the ball. Alternatively, Ema R. said that the team needs a little more determination and concentration in their game and practice. Nonetheless, there are a lot more things that the team does well. For example, Julia R., another skilled member of the team, states that the group is very good at layups and are lucky to have an amazing coach, Ms. Groot. The girls basketball team is fantastic and we are very lucky to have them as representatives of Keller! Please be sure to thank them for what they have done this season.
