Have any of you asked yourself before, what is Hanukkah? Why do people celebrate? As many of you know, Hanukkah is the Jewish Festival of Light. Hanukkah is celebrated because of when the Jews rededicated the second Jewish temple after they recovered it back from their Greek-Syrian oppressors during the Maccabees Revolt. This act occurred in the 160s B.C.E.

In the two books of Maccabees in the Apocrypha refers to the story legend of Hanukkah. In 165 B.C.E, after a three year struggle led by Judah, Jews had defeated the Syrian tyrant. After the big event, a festival was held in the honor of the Jewish success. The festival was held in the Temple in Jerusalem, and with the act they made, it was dedicated to the Jewish God.

According to the Torah, after defeating the Syrian tyrant, a little curse (bottle) of oil was found. The curse of oil was supposed to supply the Temple with a one day light; however, the curse provided them with oil for eight days! Another story in the Torah, mentions that the curse provided oil for eight days was because God wanted to honor those of whom worked hard on conquering the Syrian tyrant. The Torah also gave out information about how the contributions to the many legends, like the torchlight parade temple.

Jews, in this holiday, cook their food in oil. That act is made because they want to thank God for what made them survive, which is the little curse of oil. Well known foods like potato latkes, sufganiyot (doughnuts), brisket, short ribs, and noodle kugel are served on the table on Hanukkah approach. In the celebration of Hanukkah, gifts get exchanged and contributions are made to the poor.

Of course lots of people know that lighting candles in Hanukkah is a main thing. One candle is supposed to be lit every day, until the last day of Hanukkah, which there would be only one candle left in the middle to light all the other candles.

Now, having more information about Hanukkah, would you be able to explain why they celebrate it next time?

האם מישהו מכם שאל את עצמכם, מה זה חנוכה? למה אנשים חוגגים? כפי שרבים מכם יודעים, חנוכה הוא חג האור היהודי. כאשר היהודים הקדישו מחדש את בית המקדש היהודי השני לאחר שהחזירו אותו מן הסורים. מעשה שהתרחש בשנות השישים.
