Nervous for High School

Dear Advice Giver,

On one hand I am so ready to get out and be done with junior high all ready, but I must admit at the same time, I'm going to be sad to leave some of my friends behind and feel a bit overwhelmed at attending such a large school with much wider age gaps. Will I be picked on? Will I be liked? Will have I have friends to sit with at lunch? Any tips?

As someone who was a high school teacher for over seven years, as well as having one on one meetings with school district 211 for the past twelve years, here are the top 5 successful high school transitions tips!

1. Take summer classes and/or join a summer sports camp - This will get you used to the building size and you'll be able to scope out the path to your classes without many people there. In addition, you also get to meet teachers and coaches ahead of time so you won't be lonely the first day.

2. Don't miss the incoming Freshman Kick Off Event that occurs at each high school about a week before classes begin. Here you can pick up your chrome book, find out what team your on, and again meet some new friendly faces!

3. Read up and Prepare yourself. Check out the on-line Freshman guide that probably has many of your questions already answered: Click Here to Access it! In addition, each high school also has their own Youtube links - go get glace before you go!

Schaumburg's Youtube link.

Conant's Youtube link.

4. Do your work and put in the effort and you'll do just fine! And if you are struggling, don't forget to talk to your teachers and hit the tutoring centers:
