Sgraffito tile

The subject of my creation is a whale with a bunch of abstract designs around it. This work was made using clay for the base and a scratch utensil to draw the actual whale and designs. I chose to create this because I like whales and I thought it would look cool. I use contrast with the dark background and the white drawings. I also used texture by pressing harder on some places to make the texture look different.

Some composition rules that are showcased in my artwork are framing with the little border I put around it. I also use informal balance with where the whale is placed and where the background designs are placed. My project evolved because I added the little wave like designs after because I felt it was to plain and it needed a little more.

The meaning behind this artwork is a whale in a place it is not used to being, and having to change to adapt to the area. This artwork connects to my life because sometimes I am put in a place I am not used to and need to adapt. One thing I would change is the whale, I would take more time to perfect the shape.
