Mask Design

To make this mask I began by creating a mask shape using crumpled up newspaper, that I then draped a slab of clay over, that was made using the slab maker. After I got the shape of my mask I was able to go in and create the facial features. To create the mouth I made a pinch pot and then attached it to the mask base, I cut out the inside to make the mouth look more realistic. I also attached a nose to add more dimension and made teeth. I then created a pinch pot for the ears, that I eventually cut in half to create two similar size/shaped ears. I cut out the eyes to make the mask look more realistic, drew scars on, and added small coils around the face to add wrinkles which also created a more realistic, detailed look. I chose to use these techniques because they were the techniques that I had been taught and know how to do the best, they also seemed the most appropriate in making my mask as realistic and detailed as possible. I chose to create "The Hound's" mask from the TV show Game of Thrones because it is my favorite show. This mask has more of a "modern" meaning as it resembles a modern-day TV show, that is known to be one of the greatest, and personally, I find it to be THE greatest. Overall I am happy with how this mask came out, specifically with how realistic it looks in comparison to the original mask, yet still containing a few subtle differences. One thing I would do differently next time would be to spend more time working on the details on the face and make the finished piece look more beat up than I did.
