Creating Value

The assignment for the project on the left was to draw value scale. Then, after we were done with the basic value scale, we drew a shaded value scale. I did these two value scales by using different weight pencils. This helped me a lot because it meant that I didn't have to push really hard on my paper, using a very light pencil. Also for this project, I used a value scale which helped me know how dark different sections of my scale should be. I did this project because I wanted to know how to draw different values better for my value projects.

Because of this project, I was able to do my next project more easily. For the next project, (on the right) our assignment was to take up picture of ourselves, grid the printed picture and grid the paper we were drawing it on. I did this project using a variety of graphite pencils that differed in value. I looked very closely at my picture and made sure that I had the correct shadows across my face.

I did this project because I wanted to begin to learn how to use grids. I had never used grids before this project and I wanted to get some experience under my belt. Also, I wanted to do a self portrait that I really worked at looking like me. I had done many self portraits, but none took the time and carefulness that this one did and I was happy with my final product.
