Paper Sculpture

For this project, the subject is the face of some animal. The assignment for this project was to write down a word that described the first semester of school. I chose the word interesting. The assignment was to then create a sculpture that represented that word and I thought of a face with huge eyes and strips of paper sticking up to make it three-dimensional. I created this piece of work by starting with the prominent features of the face like the eyes and mouth. After I cut these from my piece of paper, I cut out strips of paper for connectors between these features. I also made ears and a nose for my sculpture. After I had created the base of the project, I made strips sticking up from around the mouth and eyes. These were to make the project more interesting and, as stated before, make it three-dimensional. In this project, I used a glue gun to connect all the parts of this sculpture and paper for the parts.

I chose to create this project because I thought that this face would be interesting. This sculpture has many crazy elements and leaves a lot to the imagination so I thought this was a good idea for my word. I also made the mouth so it was turned up slightly, which adds expression on the animal's face. In my sculpture, I used balance. Because this piece was supposed to be representational of a face, I wanted it to look like one, so I balanced the distance between the eyes, the nose and the mouth. This made the piece more realistic which I was happy with.

This project evolved from one that was only two dimensional, to one that was three dimensional. When I started this project, I wasn't fully aware of what three dimensional was, so I was sort of planning to just create the face, but I soon realized this wasn't three dimensional and added the strips of paper going up. This made my piece more representational of my chosen word and made it much cooler as well. I am fairly happy with my final product and am glad I made the changes I did.
