Wearable Sculpture

The assignment for this project was to create a wearable sculpture using any materials we wanted. I decided to make a mask of sorts with horns and a shield shape for a body. For this project, I used a cardboard base and hot glued various fabrics onto it. I then felted the underside of the mask so it would be comfortable for the person wearing it and then placed feathers around the eyes and coming off the side of the face. The last thing I did was glue on string so the mask would stay on and cut out shapes of purple felt to cover the glue.

I chose to create this specific piece of artwork because I have chickens so I thought the feathers would be very available. I also liked the idea of a war mask and this design looked sort of like that. I also created quite a contrast in colors and I think that this brightens up the piece and makes it more interesting. For this piece, I used grouping for the feathers. I only really put them around the eye area and this was because I liked the idea of that area being the focus. I also wanted to leave the mouth area bare so the only expressions from the person wearing the mask could be through the eyes.

This project evolved from a plaster base, to just the cardboard base. When I put the plaster on, it got flaky and wanted to come off so I decided to tear it off and just have cardboard. I also was originally going to leave the glue I used to connect the string in the open, but I decided that those small purples shapes looked cooler. I am happy with the changes I made and quite happy with my final product.
