Final 3D Design Portfolio

Overall, 3D design was a very difficult class for me. This was the case because I had trouble coming up with ideas for backgrounds and thoughts beyond the focal point of my piece. In 2D and most of the other art classes I have taken in my life, I have only had to think of an idea and create it, drawing the background without a problem. However, in 3D, I was forced to think more three dimensionally which I struggled with. In 3D, the processes I enjoyed the most were the creating of the political hands project and creating the figure in the inside out project. I loved the whole process of the political hands project because alginate, the material that we dipped our hands in for their form, was a really cool material to use. I also loved making the background for this project because I had a firm idea cemented of what to do. For the inside out project, I really liked the process because creating the human form out of clay was really fun to do. My first attempt failed, so the second attempt turned out even better and I was really happy with the plan for that project as well. The two hardest processes in projects for me were the clay in the bust and thinking of a interesting idea in my concentration series. I had never made a bust out of clay before so the detail was very new and challenging for me. I also couldn't get my bust to look like my person which I would have liked to have been able to do. In the concentration series, I really struggled with the theme I chose. The theme was nature staring at nature but once I had created my main objects (the two parts of nature), I struggled to make cool backgrounds and think of more cool ideas for this peace.

The political hands and inside out projects were the most fun to make and were the projects that I was most proud of. I really had firm ideas for these projects and they really turned out well. For all these projects I met the standards because I did what the assignment told me to do. For the political hands project, I created hands that addressed a past political issue (Holocaust). For the inside out project I created a piece that involved the theme of something coming from the inside out. I also stuck to my ideas in these pieces and met the deadline to have them completed. I also learned a lot about new things in art that I didn't know how to do before (alginate, making a bust) and improved my overall skill throughout the year which also shows that I met the standard.

My art this year relates to my life in many ways. The bust I created was a bust of Childish Gambino, one of the rappers I listen to all the time. The political hands were about the Holocaust which I read about and am interested in. The mainah sculpture was about Maine which is important to the lives of all of us and my relief portrait is a sculpture of my dog Porro, who is a huge part of my life. I found that in 3D, I found myself repeatedly using sculpey and clay to sculpt. I think this could be the case because they create solid forms that are fairly easy to sculpt so you can really achieve what you are trying to make in your sculpture, unlike wire which is much harder to use. Overall, I created some projects that I am quite proud of and 3D design was a good learning experience for me.
