Ceramics II

The project I did this year in Ceramics II that I am most proud of is the mask project. I am proud of this piece because of how difficult it was to make and yet I still think it turned out well. I had to make two different semi-circles and then combine them to make the head. Additionally, I had to make the four big teeth and the little ones which were difficult as they wanted to fall with gravity. I also think the mask looks really cool with the glazes I used and I think the glazing turned out well. I learned a lot about patience in this project as it was very difficult to get the right form to stick. Ceramics is a lot about patience and sculpting something until it works and this project did this for me, making my later projects more easy. The effect of the scales are also something that I really like. They really add to the snake and make it seem even more scary atop a head.

This class has increased my appreciation for sculptors and their ceramics in the real world. I know now how difficult it is to craft clay into an exact form and how difficult it is to make the work look good sometimes, and so I have a newfound respect for the ridiculous detail and works in the world now. I also like the style of ceramics more as I have had more experience with it. Before I took this class, I liked drawing and painting a lot and I wasn't a big fan of sculpture, but now I have more experience and exposure to ceramics and so I like the style more. As a result of this, I will probably try to work with clay more at home. I enjoyed ceramics this year and so I hope to continue making things out of clay.
