Two Artist Research Project

Bio:

Abraham Said was born in 1976 in Fustat, Egypt. Fustat is an area of Cairo Egypt and Said came from a family of potters. His father became a big influence on Said as well as the rich culture in Egypt. Said is known for his elaborate vases, inspired by the ancient work of Egyptians, details such as sharp lines and bold shapes. Said’s carvings in the vases are derived from Islamic jug filter designs. In ancient times, jugs filtered the impurities of the water in the Nile and Said wants to bring these carvings back to show their history. He has partaken in many demonstrations in the Middle East and has been recognized for his artistic ability.

Adrienne Eliades

Bio:

Adrienne Eliades is a potter and engaged artist that lives in Vancouver, Washington. She received her BA in art from UNC and MFA in ceramics from Florida. She has been an artist-in-residence at San Diego University, Ash Street Project in Oregon and many other projects at various institutes. Her work is centered around the aesthetics of design and social dining practice. Using the information from her 20th century domestic spaces research, Eliades reinvents mid century patterns and social dining experiences. Adrienne’s inspiration comes from her idea that what we eat shapes our global cultures and identities. One of Eliade’s goals is to connect one another and the food we eat while illustrating the influence of routine and ritual as the basis of culture. Eliades’ methods range from wheel-throwing to slip casting to create forms with clean lines and curves punctuated by asymmetry.

Compare and Contrast:

Both Eliades and Said are known for the clean lines and detail of their work. Eliades gets this from slip casting while Said institutes these sharp lines in his elaborate vases. The also both construct containers of sorts, Eliades with the dining ware and Said with the vases. Both artists also create work that has a purpose. Although the dining ware that Eliades includes in her work is not actually used and is more for show, both the vases and these pieces could be used as objects that are used in everyday life. Eliades and Said differ in their work as Said is inspired by the work of ancient egyptians while Eliades works has her own ideas. Eliades has inspirations, but she is not illustrating the work of others in her own work. Said and Eliades also come from very different backgrounds where different kinds of art is relevant and common.
