Stars and Stripes

For this creation, the subjects are the buildings and the stars spelling "USA." The assignment for this project was to create a picture containing red, white and blue in the form of rectangles and stars. I created this piece using markers. I used some art markers, but for the most part I used sharpie. I created the project with many different combinations among the three colors and different angles of the lines. For the stars, I just alternated red and blue and but them together to form the acronym "USA." I chose to create the city of red, white and blue because most buildings are rectangles. Because this was the case, it fit half the criteria of the project and from there, all I had to do was create stars.

I arranged this piece so that the buildings weren't equal in height to make it more realistic and so that it wouldn't be a continuous pattern. Most of this piece is repetitive and so if I had made all the buildings equal in height, it would be boring. In this project I used sharp focus and a low horizon line. I used a low horizon line because I didn't want the bottom of the piece to distract the viewer. I wanted most of the attention to be directed toward the "USA" and the tops of the buildings and a high horizon line wouldn't make this the case. I created hard focus in this piece by outlining the buildings in a silver marker. This made the lines crisper and draws more attention towards the buildings. Most of my patterns are in the buildings so I wanted them to be noticeable. Between the low horizon line and the sharp focus, the focus of this piece is the stars and the buildings and this is just how I want it to be.

This project evolved from buildings with stars in the sky, to buildings and stars in the sky that form the acronym "USA." Because this project is very connected to America, this works and I am pretty happy with my final product.
