Final 2D Design Portfolio

Overall, I had a great time in 2D design. I loved that we had a lot of class time to work on our pieces and I loved most of the assignments. My favorite assignments in 2D were the duck stamp, the circle project and the beautiful oops. The duck stamp was one of my favorites because it was a project that needed to be really realistic. I love to draw realistically and this project was fun because I really got to see how similar my ducks would look to real ducks. The circle project was another favorite project of mine because there were so many possibilities and different options. I chose to draw a snake, but I could have chosen any number of things. As for the beautiful oops, I have also liked that assignment. I think it is very cool that there are so many different interpretations of a splotch of ink. I also was really happy with my result this year because I feel like a seal in the air is a really cool idea. I also love the way it turned out and the way the gold looked in the buildings and on the circus ball. In 2D, I struggled with the macro leaf project and the stars and stripes project. The macro leaf project was hard for me because I felt like their was nothing interesting to draw. Besides the veins of the leaves, there was nothing but a blend of colors to represent the body of the leaf. This probably could have been avoided by choosing different leaves to draw that were more interesting. The stars and stripes project was also a struggle for me because of the same reason. Being able to draw in only red, whites and blues and lines and stars was very limiting for me because in most of my pieces, I love to use a lot of colors and multiple shapes. I feel like this was again a project that turned out to be pretty bland but I was happy with the way the rest of my projects turned out.

In 2D design, I learned a lot about the significance of value. Through foundations, I knew that having a range of value enhanced a piece but with a project like the signature self-portrait, I learned this more and more. While working on the signature self-portrait, I had to focus a great deal in matching the values from my picture. Many of the shadows on my face were ones that I would not have drawn without looking at a picture, but by the end, drawing these dark shadows improved my piece. The range of value contributes a huge amount to my signature self-portrait, a project I was very happy with. During 2D, I also learned what I like to do most in art. For projects like the macro leaf and the stars and stripes projects, I didn't enjoy them because they were so blah with so little detail and things happening. After completing these projects, I realized that I love to draw realistically or with a lot of detail in my pieces. Projects like the duck stamp and hands were ones I loved because with the duck stamp, I could try to draw a perfectly representational duck and with the hands, although it wasn't realistic, I could be creative with a lot of detail in the zentangles. These two realizations were ways that I improved in 2D this year and I am happy with my growth.
