Maui and the Sun
A long, long time ago there lived a clever boy named Māui. Every night around the fire Māui’s brothers would complain about the sunlight. There were never enough hours to do their chores, to hunt and fish. Māui said “I, Māui, can catch the sun!” His brothers laughed, “You cannot catch the sun Māui, he is too powerful”. But Māui said, “Nothing is impossible.
Māui and his brothers travelled to a huge, deep pit. Inside the sun was sleeping. Māui and his brothers put their net over the pit and hid in caves and behind trees, silently waiting for the sun to wake up. As the sun began to rise Māui called, “Pull on the ropes, pull as hard as you can!” The brothers were scared but they pulled with all their might so the sun could not escape. The sun was furious, he began throwing fire and roaring at the brothers. “What are you doing?” shouted the sun. “You fly too quickly across the sky,” said Māui “we never have enough time in the day to do all of our work. If we let you go, will you promise to fly slowly across the sky and give us more daylight?” The sun finally gave up and agreed.
From that day on, the sun flew slowly across the sky, giving man time to do all their chores. Māui was forever known as the man who slowed the sun.

Dolphins
What do dolphins look like?
A dolphin is a sea animal but they are mammals, not fish. They have two fins on the side and one on the back to help them to swim fast. They can be a mix of black, white and grey. Dolphins have fat under the skin to keep them warm in the cold seas. They breathe out of a nostril on the top of their head called a blowhole.
Where do dolphins live?
Dolphins live in seas and rivers. They live together in groups called ‘pods’.
What do dolphins eat?
Dolphins eat fish. Bottlenose dolphins hunt their prey by swimming around in big circles near fish, beating their tails down hard to stir up the seafloor making the water cloudy. The dolphins swim around, making the circle smaller and smaller, trapping the fish like a net. As the fish jump out, the other dolphins catch them in their mouth.

Dolphins can jump out of the water and flip over to land on their back, belly or side. This is called ‘breach’. They breach to let other dolphins know about food nearby.

Jack and the beanstalk
Once upon a time, there was a boy called Jack. Jack lived in a cottage with his mother. They were very poor, the only thing they owned was a cow. One day, Jack’s mother asked him to take the cow to market to sell it, so they could get some money. On the way, Jack met a man, who gave him some magic beans in return for the cow. When Jack came home with the beans his mother was angry. She threw the beans out of the window and sent him to bed.
The next morning, a giant beanstalk had grown in the garden! Jack climbed the very tall beanstalk. When Jack finally reached the top, he saw an enormous castle. Jack went inside. Suddenly, Jack heard a loud noise and hid. A huge giant came into the room with a hen and a golden harp. “Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, I smell the blood of a little boy” He shouted. The giant sat down at the table. “Lay!” said the giant
and the hen laid an egg. “Sing!” said the giant. The harp sang and the giant fell asleep. Jack jumped out of the cupboard and took the hen and the harp. As he ran, the harp shouted. The giant woke up and chased Jack. Jack climbed down the beanstalk and the giant followed him.
As Jack got to the bottom of the beanstalk, he shouted, “Help!” Jack’s mother came out with an axe. She used it to chop the bottom of the beanstalk. The giant fell and crashed to the ground.
