This is a story about a boy who is going to get a new baby brother or sister. How do his feelings change?

Once you have listened to the book a few times, answer these questions

Who looked after Kāhu?
What does pēpi mean?
How did Kāhu feel about having a new baby in his house?
Do Kāhu’s feelings change? Why or why not?
Does Kāhu have a baby brother or sister?
Have you got a younger brother or sister? How did you feel before they were born?
If you don’t have a younger brother or sister, what do you think it would be like?

Read through the poem

Blends are two letters that begin or end a word and together they make one sound.

For example,

f and r make fr
b and l make bl
s and h make sh

Find some blends in the poem and circle them, try to find 5 different blends at the start of words.

For each blend you find, try to think of another word that starts with the same blend

For example,

fl = flight, float
bl = black, bliss

Show someone in your family and make sure to tell them what a blend is

Read the poem again and try to find the rhyming words. Ask a grown up to help if you are stuck!

Write a list of the rhyming words, and see if you can add more words that aren’t in the poem to the list (remember to make sure that they rhyme!)

Verbs

A verb is an action word. Examples of verbs are, running, jumping, singing.

Can you put these words into sentences? Choose one verb and one noun for each of your sentences.

For example, Mum went swimming at the beach.

Writing

Finish this story

“The day I forgot my umbrella…”.

Think about what would happen if you forgot your umbrella on a windy rainy day. In your story, say what happens next?

Draw a plan for your writing, this could be a picture of you without your umbrella. You might want to add some key words around your picture that show how you felt. Then write your story. Read your story to yourself and then share it with someone in your bubble.

If I was an animal...

If you could choose one animal to be for the day what animal would it be and why?

Think about the different types of animals like the cheetah, the lion, the elephant, a giraffe, a hippo, a monkey or any other animal you can think of.

Make sure you draw a picture of the animal you have chosen.

Write your story and remember to include why you wanted to be the animal you have chosen.

Challenge: Can you add detail to your story that gives the reader more information. Think of describing words that could describe the shape, colour, and size of your animal

King or Queen

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a king or queen? What things would you do if you were royalty?

Write a story pretending to be a king or queen. Describe what you would do, how you would feel and what you would wear?

Challenge: Use lots of describing words to make your story more interesting. Read the sentences below to see the difference between a boring sentence and an interesting sentence.

Boring sentence:

I had a crown.

Interesting sentence:

I wore a gold sparkling crown that was decorated with colorful and rare gems.

Draw a picture of you in your royal outfit!

Acrostic Poem

Choose a weather related word to create an acrostic poem. Some words you could choose from are RAIN, CLOUDS, STORM, SUNSHINE, WIND. Draw a picture that matches your chosen weather word

Here is an example:

Raindrops falling

A puddle growing

I hear a storm coming

No! I’m not scared

Extension: Pick another weather word to write a poem about, then draw a picture

This week, our maths activities are all about addition with a focus on two strategies called “counting on” and “counting on in 10’s”.

Strategy one- Counting on in 1’s

Here are two videos to help you learn this strategy:

To use the count on strategy, start your count from the biggest number, counting on the second smaller set.

Example one: To solve 7 + 3, put 7 in your head and count on 3 → 7, 8, 9, 10. You can use your fingers to help you track what you are counting on.

Example two: Lock in (start from) the biggest number and count on the smaller number, to solve 22 + 5 =

22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27

Use the counting on strategy to solve these problems:

13+4=

23+5=

31+8=

45+3=

56+3=

62+4=

Here are some problems for this week. Show how you solved each problem by drawing a picture representation like one of the picture examples above.

Extension: Pick a number between 20 - 95, can you add 5 to that number using the count on strategy

Strategy two- Counting on in 10’s

Watch this video to see the counting on in 10’s strategy being taught by Mrs Virk

Sometimes, we have to add numbers together that are too big to count on our fingers. One way to do this is called counting on in ten’s.

There are 2 skills you need to know to use this strategy.

The first is counting in tens from any number.

Here is a hundreds board. If we count in tens, we start from ten and move down the board.

Can you try it?

What could happen if we started from a different number? Like 4.

I tried it and my pattern goes:

What do you notice about my numbers?

Can you try counting on in tens from these numbers

5 7 8 12 46 32

Did you notice the same pattern?

The other skill you need to know to use this strategy is to know how many tens are in a number.

I used popsicle sticks to help me work out these numbers. I put a rubber band around each group of ten to help me work out how many tens I had. Here are some pictures of what I did.

40 has 4 tens.

70 has 7 tens

Can you try making bundles of ten for these numbers?

Now let’s use our skills to help us work out this problem

Example: Lock in (start counting from) the untidy number and count on the tidy number, to solve 22 + 30 =

Use the counting on in 10’s strategy to solve these problems:

What if Japdeep has 16 candles and Lusi gives him 50 more? (16+50=)

What about if he had 62 and Lusi gave him 20 more? (62+20)

Word problems

Each day pick one of these word problems to practise the addition strategies to solve the daily problems. For an extension, you can choose your own numbers to fill in the blanks.

Birthday party fun!

Frogs at the Pond

There were _________ frogs sitting on lily pads and ________ frogs swimming in the water.

How many frogs are there in the pond?

There are _________ jellybeans in a jar. Grandma gave you ____________ more. How many would there be in the jar now?

Counting sheep

There are ________ sheep in one paddock and _________ sheep in another paddock. How many sheep are there on the farm

science

Fireworks in a Jar

You will need:

Warm water
Oil
A tall glass
Food colouring

Method:

Fill a tall glass with warm water.
Pour a small amount of oil into another container and add a few drops of food colouring.
Give it a good stir, if it doesn’t mix, add a bit of water
Pour the food colouring and oil mixture into the warm water and watch the fireworks.

The Science Behind it

Oil and water do not mix. Oil is less dense than water (meaning there is less of it in the same volume) therefore floats on top of the water in a layer. The food colouring is water based so it sinks through the oil into the water below. When the food colouring sinks to the bottom, it leaves trails resembling to fireworks as some of the colour diffuses into the water.

Thinking Questions

What is the reason behind oil and water not mixing together?
How are fireworks created in this experiment?
Why does the food colouring sink through the oil?

Investigation Time

Conduct the same experiment using milk (replace the water with milk). What did you discover?
Try it with another liquid such as a fizzy drink, juice. What did you find out?

Cloud Watching

Make yourself some cloud watching binoculars

Equipment:

2 cardboard tubes

Glue, tape or string to hold it together.

Something to colour it in with (optional)

You need to get 2 cardboard tubes
Put them together and use glue, tape or string to keep them stuck together.
Decorate your binoculars by colouring them in

Find a spot to lie down outside to cloud watch, what shapes and objects can you see in the clouds? Sometimes I see dragons and butterflies. Choose a cloud you like and draw it, turn it into what your imagination has seen

There are three main types of clouds:

Cumulus clouds are puffy, like cotton wool

Cirrus clouds are wispy, like strands of hair floating through the air.

\Stratus clouds are like a blanket covering part of the sky

Become a cloud detective, see if you can spot each of these clouds this week. Can you see more than one type of cloud in the sky at the same time? Did you see any clouds that look different to these three cloud types?

Make your own cumulus, cirrus and stratus clouds with paper and cotton wool balls. Label each cloud you make E.g.

Rainbows

Make a rainbow

Materials needed: clear glass and a white sheet of paper

Fill three-quarters of a glass with water and move all your supplies (the glass and a white sheet of paper), toward a sunny window
Place the paper on a nearby table or windowsill and hold the water glass above it
Watch as the sunlight passes through the glass, bends and forms a rainbow on the blank page
In the sky, rainbows form when sunlight refracts or bends just like it did when it passed through the water and onto your paper

Draw a Rainbow

Draw a rainbow with the colour in order - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Make sure you draw the colour red at the top of the rainbow and the last colour of violet at the bottom of the rainbow. Learn to say the colours in order, then learn to write them

Make a Spectroscope

Have a go at making your own spectroscope to see a rainbow

What you need:

Empty paper towel roll
Scissors or a craft knife
An old CD
Pencil
Small piece of cardboard (see what boxes you have in your recycling)
Sellotape

What to do:

Ask an adult to cut a thin slit at a 45 degree angle toward the bottom of the cardboard tube

2. Directly across from the slit, make a small viewing hole using your craft knife, again have an adult help with this part

3. Trace one end of your paper towel roll onto your small piece of cardboard, and cut it out

Cut a straight slit across the centre of your cardboard circle you cut out. Tape this circle to the top of your paper towel tube

5. Insert the CD into your cut slit with the shiny side facing up

Take your spectroscope outside, point the top slit up towards the sky and look through the viewing hole. You will see a rainbow inside!
