When writing your stories remember what good writers do…
Extension:
Can you use ‘wow’ words in your story. ‘Wow’ words are more interesting words to use, for example, instead of using the word big you could say enormous
Can you use your capital letters and full stops to show each idea as a sentence. Remember we use a capital letter for the first word of the sentence. The other time we use a capital letter is when we are writing someone’s name.
The Disgusting Sandwich

The sandwich in the story is really disgusting. Imagine that you are making your own disgusting sandwich. What would you put inside it?
Have a look at the picture to help you think of some ideas:
When you have decided what will go in your disgusting sandwich. Draw it and write a story to describe how you make it.
Here is Miss Tailby’s example:
To make my disgusting sandwich, I put mud on my bread first. Then I add some slimy worms and finally I put another piece of bread on top.

Spy Mouse
Write a story about the picture.
Ideas to think about:
What is the mouse story?
Why is it there?
Who does the mouse work for?
Why does the mouse need the cheese?
Does it safely steal or retrieve the cheese?
Who is the hero?
Who is the villain?
Have a think of these ideas and decide which of these ideas you are going to include in your story.

Maui and the Sun - Retell

Best Thing at Home
We have spent a lot of time at home and I am sure that there are things that you have enjoyed and liked a lot. Think of the best activity you have done at home and write a story about it.
Draw a picture of you doing the activity and then write it down.
Maybe it was baking or cooking, a game with your toys, going for a walk, playing hide and seek, building something….
Remember to use your finger spaces, look up words using your word card and read back your story to someone in your home.
This week your Maths activities are brought to you the theme of cars. Choose your maths activity for the day
Activity 1 - Racing Car Challenge
Have you got any toy cars at home? In this activity you will need 2 or more toy cars.
Place car #1 at the starting point and push it across the floor. Mark its stopping point with a piece of tape. Using any non standard measuring objects (e.g clips, cubes, strings, handspan etc. ) to measure the distance from start to finish. Then repeat for cars 2, 3, and so on
Which car travelled the shortest distance?
Which car travelled the longest distance?
Can you order the cars from the shortest to the longest distance travelled?
Have a look at the vehicles below in each row, and order them from the longest (1) to the shortest (3).
Activity 2 - Comparing Weight
Compare the two vehicles based on weight and complete the sentences below.
The truck weighs ______ bricks.
The bus weighs ______ bricks.
The truck is ______ than the bus.
The bus is ______ than the truck.
Draw a line to match each toy with a fact/Decide with fact belongs to which toy
It weighs more than 5 sticks.
It weighs less than 5 sticks.
It is not the heaviest or the lightest.
Balance Scales
You can directly compare the weight of two of your toys by making your own balance scales. Here is Miss Dreadon’s video on how to make your own scales. You will need a coat hanger, string, scissors and two paper cups.
When your balance scales are ready, place one toy in each cup and discover which one is heavier and which one is lighter. You can also watch Miss Dreadon show you how to use your balance scales here. Have fun comparing different toys and items from your house.
Activity 3 - Carpark
Make a carpark from a box lid, or similar, and find out how many cars you can park in your carpark. How many did you fit? If you made a smaller carpark from another box lid, do you think the same number would fit?
If you don't have cars, use your imagination and find something else in your house that can be pretend cars.
Activity 4 - Cylinder Fun
Make a cylinder from a rectangle piece of paper lightweight card. Trace around the base of your cylinder on another piece of paper, cut that circle out and tope it to the bottom of your cylinder to be the base.
Find some small toys or items. Before you start, first guess how many toys do you think your cylinder will hold exactly?
Count the toys one by one into your cylinder - how many fit?
Make a selection of different sized cylinders e.g. short and wide, tall and narrow. How many items can you fit in your different sized cylinders?
Do you think cylindres are a good container for your items? Why or why not?
Could you make a cylinder to fit exactly 10 of your items?
Can you find just one thing that will fit just right for each of your different cylinders? Just like Mrs Harland has found the right box for her selection of toys in this video
Activity 5 - Height and Cars
Have you ever wondered how height affects the distance a car travels?
Let’s learn more about height using our toy cars and ramps.
Materials:
Some cars, trucks, etc.
Objects to make ramps e.g. blocks, cardboard tubes, cardboard box, etc.
Optional - stopwatch
Set up your chosen design for a ramp. The top of your ramp will need to rest on something like a chair or steps. Push your cars down the ramp
How fast did they go?
What happens if you add some height to your ramp, by resting the top of your ramp on something higher?
What happens if you take away some height from your ramp?
Does adding height make your car travel slower or faster?
Extra spring activity: The carpark needs a bit of gardening. Design your own flower garden. Find some flowers that are different heights. Stick them to your piece of paper from shortest to tallest and add the rest of the details for your garden, or use colouring pencils, felts, paint, collage, etc
This week we continue to explore vibration, sound, echo and pitch + have some fun in making your own musical instruments
Water Whistle
Let’s see if you can make a water whistle and see how you can change the pitch of your whistle. Follow the instructions below, or you can watch this video on how to make and use a water whistle
Equipment:
Glass of water
Straw
Scissors
Instructions:
About ⅓ of the way down your straw, partially cut through the straw. The cut should be almost all the way through the straw but leave a small piece uncut to keep the two straw sections attached.
Bend the straw into a right angle at the cut, be careful not to break your straw apart
Place the longer section of your straw into your cup of water
Bend the shorter section of your straw at a 90 degree angle. Now blow into the straw with a light breath.
What do you hear?
Raise and lower your straw in your glass of water while you are blowing, what do you hear now? Did the pitch change?
If you are having trouble producing a whistling sound, try pinching the top of the long end of the straw
Remember that sound waves are vibrations traveling through the air that reach your ears. The water whistle works through the vibration of air itself, and the column of air inside the straw. The longer part of the straw in the water is full of air and water. When you blow across the top of the longer straw segment, through your short segment, you are causing the column of air to vibrate.
That vibrating column of air creates the whistling sound you hear. The pitch of the whistling is dependent on how much air you allow to be inside the straw. As you raise your straw up, the more air that is inside the straw, the lower the pitch of the whistle. When you lower your straw down further down into the water, the higher the pitch of the whistle.
Make an Echo
An echo is when a sound wave bounces off a surface, you hear a sound a second or third time, how does an echo work?
Equipment:
2 paper towel tubes
Pie/cake pan
Instructions:
Prop the pie pan up on a table so it is vertical
Take one tube and place it on the table, angled a bit but aimed at your pie plate
Take the other tube and have it angled the opposite way, also aimed at the pie plate
Put your ear to one of the tubes, and ask someone else to talk softly into the other tube
Can you hear what was said through the other tube?
The sound waves you create by speaking travel through the tube, hit the pie pan, and bounce off, traveling back through the other tube. You are hearing the echo
Duck in a Cup
Let’s explore how you can amplify a sound through the use of a cup. Amplifying means to make a sound louder! I wonder if this experiment will sound like a duck….you can watch a video here of the instructions, or follow the ones below
Equipment:
Plastic cup
String
Wet paper towel
Craft knife or similar to poke a hole in the cup
Paper clip
Instructions:
Make a hole in the centre of the bottom of the cup. The hole needs to be big enough to put the string through
Tie the paper clip to one end of the string
Place your cup upside down, then push the other end of the string through the hole in the bottom of the cup. Pick you paper cup up and pull the string down, the paper clip will stop the string from pulling all the way through
Hold your Duck in a Cup in one hand so that your sting is dangling down beneath the cup
Wrap the wet paper towel around the string and pull down firmly in sharp little movements
Did your Duck in a Cup start quaking?
What if you use a different wet material to pull down your string? Try a dishcloth or a face cloth
So what is happening? The string vibrates as you pull the wet paper towel down. While these vibrations are normally hard to hear, the cup amplifies your duck sound, meaning it makes your duck sound louder
Make Music with a Straw Pan Flute
Create a fun musical instrument to explore how length can affect the pitch of sound waves
Equipment:
9 or 10 straws
Scissors
Sellotape
Instructions:
With your straws line them up side-by-side, and tape them together
Cut across your line of straws at an angle at the top
You have your pan flute, now blow through your straws or across the top of your straws. Experiment with holding your pan flute at different angles for you to blow through

What do you notice about the straws that make a higher pitch sound?
What do you notice about the straws that make a lower pitch sound?
Make your own Speakers
With all your knowledge about how you can amplify sound, now you can have a go at making your own speakers for a phone!
Equipment:
2 paper cups
Cardboard tube
Craft knife or scissors
Instructions:
Hold your tube to the side of each cup, and draw around it to mark where the hole needs to be
Cut out the hole, big enough for each end of your tube to slide in.
Make a hole in the side of the tube for the phone to sit in
Pop your phone into your new speakers and select some music to play.
Make Some Musical Instruments
Have a look around your house, especially in your recycling, and think about what you could make or create as a musical instrument. Will you make a drum or a shaker or a gong or a guitar or a….
Find some cardboard tubes, tins, boxes, rubber bands, scissors, glue, sellotape, etc.
Here are some pictures to inspire you on what you could make. Remember rice or dried beans could be used to help make yourself a shaker or maracas.
