Enjoy reading books you have at home, remember to talk about the story. To assist with talking about the story, ask your child questions that start with who, what, where, why, when, how.

When writing your stories remember what good writers do…
Extension:
Can you use ‘wow’ words in your story. ‘Wow’ words are more interesting words to use, for example, instead of using the word big you could say enormous
Can you use your capital letters and full stops to show each idea as a sentence. Remember we use a capital letter for the first word of the sentence. The other time we use a capital letter is when we are writing someone’s name.
Interview Family Member
Choose a member of your family that you would like to interview. This could be your mum, dad, brother, your grandmother (remember you could have your interview in person or you could call them on the phone)
When you have asked your person if they can be interviewed. Find a quiet place to talk to them and use a pen and paper to write down their answers.
Interview questions:
What is your name?
What is your favourite animal?
What is something you are good at?
When you have finished your interview. Use the information you have about them to write a story. For example: My brother’s name is Luke. He loves cheetahs and he is good at playing soccer.
When you have finished your story, read it again to check that you have used capital letters in the correct place and fullstops.
Next, try your best to draw a picture of your family member and then read your completed story to your family.
When I grow up, I want to be a…
What would you want to be when you grow up?
Close your eyes and have a little think in your head. You might want to be a… ballerina, a firefighter, a doctor, an astronaut, a scientist, a teacher, or even a ninja, you can be anything you want! You could be one thing, or many things.
For example, you might be a ballerina astronaut!
Think about what you would do, how fun it would be and why you would want to be that.
Draw a picture of yourself as who you would want to be when you grow up and write a story about who it is and why.
You can start your story off with… “When I grow up, I want to be a…”
For example: When I grow up, I want to be a ballerina astronaut so that I can twirl around in space with the stars. This would be fun.
Remember to say your idea on your hand and use your word card to help you write your story.
When you have finished writing, read you story to someone in your family.
Then go dress-up and act out who you wrote about in your story.
It’s a Shark
What do you think the diver and the shark will see on their adventure? Can you draw a shark and diver under the sea on some paper? What are some things they might find under the sea?
Write your story underneath your picture and read it to someone in your house.
Sentence Challenge - ‘Swished the water’ is an example of onomatopoeia. Using words which mimic the sound of the object or action they refer to is a powerful tool in writing. Can you think of another sound word to put in your story?
Can you change these sentences - these sentences are simple and need your help by adding detail to make them more exciting. Can you change them?
The shark was big
The man was smaller
The shark swam up high
If My Toy Could Talk
Pick one of your toys. If it could talk, what would it say?
Miss Revilla picked Grey Ted and I think he would say:
I like to travel around the world. I have lived in New Zealand, The USA, Australia and Spain.
Now, choose one of your toys and think about what it would say. Remember to stop and think before you write. Use the icons above and the word card to help you. When you finish writing, read your story to someone else.
Compare Two Animals
Think about the following animals and compare what they do differently and the same. Click on the facts Sea Turtle or Kangaroos to help you identify some answers to the questions below.
Where do the animals live?
How do they eat?
How do they move?
What covers the outside of their body?
Where do they go for shelter?
What size are they?

Extension: If you want to write about other animals, research on the internet what other animals you would like to know or compare. Use the same questions above to help you with your research. Happy fact hunting!

Here is Miss Lee with a video to recap how to compare the length of two objects. After you have watched this, complete her task and see what other two objects you can compare at your house as being longer or shorter than the other
Activity 1 - Who’s Bed is the Longest?
Who is the tallest? Mama bear, baby bear or papa bear? How do you know?
Look at the picture. Can you match the bears to their beds? Can you discuss with a family member why you think that is the right bed for the bear.
Try this yourself!
Go into each bedroom in your house. Using non-standard measuring objects (e.g hands span, string, sticks, spoons) measure and compare the length of each bed in your house and use the vocabulary: is long, is longer and is the longest.
Watch Miss Revilla use pegs to measure, and Mrs V use handspans to measure before you begin. Using a non-standard measuring object means you can find anything in your house to help measure things, for example if you were using spoons, you might find that a bed in your house is 26 spoons long!
Activity 2 - How many Steps?
Goldilocks has to run away. How many steps would she need to take?
Imagine you are Goldilocks and someone in your family is one of the bears. Choose a spot in your living room, can you walk from the living room to the front door to escape. How many steps did you take? Write it down on a chart
Ask others in your house to do the same. How many did they take? Put that on the chart. Why are the number of steps different? Maybe you need to compare the length of one of your steps with the length of one step from an adult, are they the same or different?

Activity 3 - Who is the Tallest?
Watch Miss Tailby’s video to learn all about comparing the height of objects and the language you can use to describe height and how to order from shortest to tallest
Your turn. Line up your teddies from tallest to shortest. Which teddy is the tallest? How do you know? Can you use an object e.g blocks, pencils, strings, crayons to measure how tall your teddies are. You might want to record your measurement in a chart.
Extension: Using any measuring objects (non-standard) can you compare two teddies? How much taller or shorter is one from another (e.g teddy 1 is 2 more blocks taller than teddy 2).
Additional Challenge: Line up your family from shortest to tallest. Have fun comparing
Activity 4 - Lightest or Heaviest?
The three bears each have a chair. Who is the heaviest of the 3 bears? Why do you think so?
Goldilocks sits on the chair, and breaks Baby Bear's chair. Do you think Goldilocks is heavier or lighter than Baby bear? Why do you think so?
Goldilock sits on Mother and Father's chairs. Do you think Goldilocks is heavier or lighter than Mother and Father bear? Why do you think so?
Try this yourself!
I wonder how many different types of chairs you have in your house. Can you ask an adult to help you try lifting each type of chair using hands then compare its weight. Which chair is heavier or lighter?
Can you order them from lightest to heaviest?
Extension: Can you investigate further on what makes a particular chair lighter or heavier than another chair? Which chair is just right for you and why?
Extra fun: Imagine that the three bears are doing a workout but they don’t have any weights to lift! Find something that each bear could use to lift and build their muscles.
Activity 5 - The Three Glasses
Watch Mrs Say’s video that explains volume and capacity and how you can use water and a cup to compare two containers.
The three bears left a glass of milk next to their porridge. Baby bear had the smallest glass, the mummy bear had a medium glass and the daddy bear had the largest glass.
Which glass do you think will have the most milk in it?
Find 3 different sized cups in your house and pour water in each cup
Next, using your chosen cups, pour repeated cups of water into a larger container to explore capacity.
Which of your cups fills the container the quickest? Which cup size takes the longest to fill your container, why is this?
Which of your cups has more capacity? Why?
Challenge: Make a Banana porridge for your family
Ingredients:
1 ½ cups oats
2 cups hot water
½ cup So Good Lite soy milk/regular milk
¼ tsp salt
1 tbsp honey
Method:
Place oats, hot water, milk and salt in a saucepan over medium heat and stir until the mixture boils and thickens OR microwave on high for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally
Stir in the honey and mashed banana
Serve with extra banana and milk to taste
Activity 6 - Beds for Your Toys
Make a bed for one or more of the bears
Find three soft toys of different sizes around your house.
Have some paper/cardboard/boxes of different sizes available and cut them in shapes e.g squares, rectangles, to make a bed that is the appropriate size for the chosen bear. You may want to trace around the soft toy to estimate the size.
Think about how many squares/rectangles you will need to make a bed for each bear? Which bear needs a bigger bed/smaller bed? Why do you think so?

Orange Fizzy Experiment
Watch Miss Tailby’s Orange Fizzy Experiment to find out how to carry out this experiment, plus a volcano experiment. Alternatively below is what you will need and the instructions
Equipment:
An orange
Baking soda
Teaspoon
Plate
Sharp knife
Chopping board
Instructions:
Cut your orange into small pieces, have an adult help you with this part. To do this you can start with cutting your orange in half, then cut your half into smaller pieces
Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda on to your plate and spread it out
Sprinkle a pinch of baking soda on a piece of orange, then bite into your orange to eat it, what happens in your mouth?
Invite other people in your bubble to come and try some orange and baking soda
What’s the Science? The orange is an acid and it mixed with the baking soda which is a base, and when mixed together it caused a chemical reaction. So it released carbon dioxide gas and that is what made the fizzing in your mouth
Now for another fizzy experiment - the Volcano Experiment
Equipment:
Cup or jar
Bowl, to sit your cup or jar in
Vinegar
Food colouring
Baking soda
Teaspoon
Instructions:
Pour a little bit of vinegar into your cup or jar, then place it inside your bowl
Add a little bit of food colouring to the vinegar
Add a teaspoon of baking soda to the vinegar and watch the chemical reaction!
What’s the Science? The vinegar is another type of acid, so when mixed with the base of baking soda you get another chemical reaction
Milk Swirls
A fun experiment to explore reactions, this one will show the reaction between milk and dishwashing liquid
Equipment:
Plate
Milk
Food colouring, 3 different colours
Dishwashing liquid
Instructions:
Pour milk into the plate
Add your three chosen colours to the plate of milk. Place these in different places. Watch the colours for a while as they spread, do they mix together or stay separate?
Drop a little squirt of dishwashing liquid in the middle of the plate - what happens to the colours?
What’s the Science? You are seeing a reaction between the milk and the dishwashing liquid. Our milk has fat in it, and part of the dishwashing liquid is attracted to milk fat and they attach easily to each other. The milk starts to quickly swirl, move and dance because the dishwashing liquid is racing to join the fat in the milk, and this creates the colourful swirls you observed.
Raincloud in a Jar
Why does the rain fall from the clouds when it does?

Equipment:
Jar
Water
Shaving foam
Blue food colouring
Dropper, optional
Instructions:
Fill your jar with with water until it is ¾ full
Squeeze some shaving foam on top until the jar is full
Add drops of food colouring using the dropper or straight from your food colouring bottle, put 3-4 drops to begin with
Watch what happens….you made rain! You can add some further drops of food colouring to create more rain
The science to the rain cloud - the shaving foam represents the clouds and the water represents the air. The food colouring is the rain. As more rain builds up in the clouds, it gets heavy. It becomes too heavy for the clouds to hold, and so it pushes through and the rain falls.
