topic - Technology/Arts and Crafts: Design and Build a Fale:

Fale (fah-leh), is a word for all types of traditional houses in Samoa, from small to large. It is a traditional house which is rectangular, oval or circular in shape, with wooden posts holding up a domed roof. They have thatched or corrugated tin roofs and sides made of woven coconut leaves, reeds, or timber. There are no walls.

Task : Design and build a traditional Samoan house, otherwise known as a fale (fah-leh), Use your creativity to decorate the exterior as is done in the pacific islands.

B) A Snapshot of the Pacific Island.

Read some interesting facts of Pacific Island and draw a snapshot of what it would be like living on a Pacific Island.

  • It is illegal to swim in Tonga on a Sunday!

  • Samoan people are known as the “ happy people’ to the rest of Polynesia.

  • The road that circles the largest island in Cook Island, the Ara Tapu, is only 32 kms long. That means that a non-stop drive right around the island at the maximum speed of 40kph can take just 45/50 minutes.

  • In Fijian villages, only the chief can wear hats and sunglasses.

  • Boiled bat is a special dish served in Fiji.

  • Niue is commonly known as “the Rock of Polynesia”.

  • Tokelau is the first nation in the world to use 100 percent renewable energy. The entire nation is powered by solar power and biofuel from coconuts!
