Welcome to learning at home for Week 4. We hope you had a lovely weekend with the sunny weather we had. Here are activities for this week. Remember our learning at home tasks give you the flexibility to plan these into your day around other commitments.
This week enjoy reading books you have at home, remember to talk about the story. To assist with talking about the story ask your child questions that start with who, what, where, why, when, how. Below are suggested activities for each year group, you can however choose any activities that feel right for your child

Letter Learning
Write each letter of your child’s name on a separate piece of paper. Lay out each piece of paper. On post-its or small pieces of paper, write the letters of your child’s name, one letter per piece of paper, and place these in no particular order. Show your child the letters of their name laid out and the same letters on the small pieces of paper. Then ask your child to match the letters and read the letters. You can mix them up and repeat activity.
Extend the activity by asking your child to find items in your home that also begin with the letters in their name. Have them look for 2-3 items and place them on the floor under the appropriate letter. When they're done collecting, have them show you what they’ve found. Can they think of any other words that start with those letters?
On the following days this week, choose another family members name and repeat the activity
YEAR 1
Make your own ABC Book
Find some paper, scissors, pencils/felts, and glue. Using pictures from your junk mail or drawing your own pictures, create an ABC book. Remember you could think of the names of family members, which letter page they would be and draw their picture for that page. Do a few letters each day, building your ABC book up over time
Hearing Sounds in Words
For the word of the day, write it out on paper and cut it up. Have the extra letters cut up on pieces of paper as well
Start with showing your child the word, read it to them, read it together, name the letters.
Now look at each sound in the word. To do this, segment the word by saying each individual sound, follow with reading the word again by putting the sounds together
Mix up the letters, asking your child to build the word again. Repeat saying each sound and then read the word
With the extra letters, have fun changing the first sound of the word. Each time you change the word, segment (say each individual sound) the new word you have created, then read the word.
YEAR 2
Rhyming practice
Ask your child to find 3 items from around your house. Get them to then draw a picture of the item and write what it is. Next, ask them to see if they can write a list of rhyming words for each item. Each day, pick another 3 items from around your house and repeat the task.
Build your vocabulary
Let your child pick an animal and draw a picture of it. Around their picture, ask them to write words they think relate to that animal. For example, some words related to dog could be: bark, fluffy, walk, loyal, tail, digging, playful, growl. After they have shown you their words, see if you can add new words to their list to build their vocabulary. Your child can use the brainstorming template if it helps. This task can be repeated with other animals. When they repeat the task, challenge your child to think of more interesting words, these could be related to what they animal looks like, sounds like, how they move, or where they live.
Make your own Letter Blend Book
Find some paper, scissors, pencils/felts, and glue. Using pictures from your junk mail or drawing your own pictures, create a Letter Blend book. Do a new blend each day, building your Blend Book up over time.
For example, pictures related to the blend ‘gl’ could be: glue, glasses, glad bag, glitter

Year 2 extension: Add ‘detail’ words to your story. These are words used to describe or make your story more interesting. Make sure you read your story back to yourself to check it makes sense.
Describe a community hero- Police officers
Police officers have a special job to help keep us safe. Write a story describing a police officer.
Draw a picture of a Police officer.
Write some keywords that describe the Police officer.
What do they look like/ do they wear a uniform?
How does their job help other people?
What tools do they need to do their job?

Counting On Practice
Practice using the count on strategy to solve the problems. To use the count on strategy, start your count from the biggest number, counting on the second set. For example to solve 7 + 3, put 7 in your head and count on 3 - 7, 8, 9, 10. You can use your fingers to help you track what you are counting on

Statistics Fun
Favourite Fruit
Choose four types of fruit, ask members of your family which one is their favourite out of those choices. See if you can message or phone extended family members and find out which one is their favourite. Show the results in a bar graph.

What is the difference between the top vote and the least vote
Remember in a bar graph, the numbers go up the side and the categories go along the bottom. Here’s an example

How many different ways can you arrange 8 dots?
Add together the shoe size of everyone in your house. What does this add up to? For example - In Sally's house. Sally wears size 4, Frank is size 8, Mum is size 7, Dad is size 9. If these are added together it adds up to 28
I had some colouring pencils at home, but one of them broke. How many colouring pencils might I have started with? How many pencils might I have now? What if three of them broke?
I have 5 gemstones in the bowl. I am going to add in some more gemstones. How many more gemstones could I add? How many would I have altogether?
A community is a group of people. Most of us live in Papatoetoe, this is one example of a community. We also all go to Puhinui School, this is another community.
Lots of us will be part of other communities in New Zealand and around the world. We could be part of a sports team, a church or religious community. Discuss with someone in your house, what communities you are part of?
