Weekly Poem - A Snail Surprise
Here are your poem activities for this week: Remember to read the poem each day
Monday - Draw a picture of what you visualize.
Tuesday - Explore the words that rhyme with pail, and write them on paper. Start with the word ‘pail’. Say it, write it, draw it. Pail is another word for bucket.
Your rhyming words all have the long vowel sound ‘ai’
Wednesday - Find a contraction word from the poem. Write 4 more contraction words that are not in the poem and what it means. E.g don’t = do not
Thursday - Can you spot a word from the poem that has the ‘th’ blend in it. Can you come up with 4 more words with the same sound? Write the words out on a card and practice saying the words with an adult.
Friday - Make 4 or more word cards with the ‘sn’ blend in it, to play with your sister/brother or an adult. Make a puzzle version as well. Here is an example below:

Read the story and complete the quiz.
Here are some activities for you::
Draw and colour in your favourite part from the book.
Find a word in the book that starts with the first sounds below, and write them down on paper. Practise saying the high frequency words you have found, find them on your word card

Make some playdough to make some words from the book
1 cup of flour, ½ cup of salt, ½ cup of water. Add more water if needed. You can make three different colours by separating your dough into three parts and kneading a different colour to each part.. Keep kneading the playdough until it is ready. Store in a container or a snaplock bag.
Make a card for a friend or a family member. Draw a special picture and write a message to them
Book - Pop, Pop in the Pot
Click the link to the book, Pop, Pop in the Pot, we will hear words with a short ‘o’ vowel sound.
Read the story two times.
Then answer the following questions to an adult:
What happened in the story?
Why does dad say “stop, stop, stop!”?
Why is Nat’s mum mopping up after the top of the pot popped off?
Remember you can “robot the words” or sound out the words you don’t know by sounding out each letter and then blending the sounds together.
E.g P-o-p, pop
Find the words in the book that have a short ‘o’ sound.
List these words down and say them again.
Think about a time you made popcorn. Did you hear the popping noise as the popcorn was being made?
In the story, what does the word ‘pops’ mean? Could we use another word in place of ‘pops’?
e.g. jumps, bursts, explodes. Use these words in a sentence.
Rhyming words with ‘pot’ - what words can you make that rhyme with pot?
Have a go by writing these first sounds in front of the sound ‘ot’ - d, g, h, l, n, r

Hand Vowels
On a piece of paper, with your palm facing up, trace around your hand
Starting with the thumb, write the letter ‘a’ on the thumb and draw a picture of a cat.
On your pointer finger, write the letter ‘e’ and draw a picture of a jet
On your middle finger, write the letter ‘i’ and draw a picture of a pig
On the ring finger, write the letter ‘o’ and draw a picture of a box
On the pinky finger, write the letter ‘u’ and draw a picture of a sun
Practice reading your vowel letters and listening for its short vowel sound in these special words
Vowel Swap
Fill in the missing vowel for the first picture. Then swap the vowel out for another vowel to change the word. The new word should match the picture.

CVC Word Cups
A CVC word is a Consonant-Vowel-Consonant word, for example cat and big
With letters on some cups, bottles or something else similar you can practice creating CVC words. Remember the vowel letter is the middle sound. You can break or robot (segment) your word apart, and then you can put it back together to read (blend) your word
Write letters on pieces of paper to stick to a cup
Make a three letter word, remember vowel in the middle
Sound out or robot the word, say it again quickly blending the sounds
Then swap one letter out to make a new one
Repeat steps 3 and 4.
Mystery Bag Game
You will need a bag and a partner to play this game. Find an item that will fit in your chosen bag, don’t let your partner peek while you are getting your item into the bag!
Now your partner needs to guess what the first sound of the item in your bag is. They need to ask questions like ‘Does it begin with the sound m’.
Once they have guessed the right first sound, then they can guess with the name of the item is.
