Skill Activities this Week
Syllables
All words have syllables in them. We can hear the syllables by counting each unbroken sound in a word. Happy has two syllables (hap - py) and mad has one syllable.
Read the words below and see if you can count the syllables (are there 1, 2 or 3!). Then have a go at drawing a line underneath the syllable chunks for each word. The first two have been done for you:
Seeing - 2 syllables - See ing
Blanket - 2 syllables - blank et
Leaf
Monster
Hug
Parrot
Ladybug
Volcano
Use some crayons to colour the pictures below by how many syllables each word has:
Say the word out loud and clap how many syllables you can hear. If you hear one syllable, colour the picture in red. If you hear two syllables, colour the picture in green and if you can hear three syllables then colour the picture in blue
Alliteration
Alliteration is when we hear a string of words that start with the same sound
Here is an example of the use of alliteration in these Crazy Cones:
Can you draw your own ice cream with 3 scoops and using alliteration create your own crazy flavoured ice cream. Choose any starting letter and be as creative as you like.
Then make yourself an ice cream menu for your whole family. Ask each person in your house for either their favourite flavour ice cream or a favourite letter to get you started.
Long i sound
We make the long i sound when we see -igh, -ie or -y in a word. For example light, pie or fry.
Read the words below and sort them by -igh, -ie or -y words:
Long Vowel - oa
Can you correctly label these pictures, think carefully about where the ‘oa’ sound goes.
Choose from the following words to fill the gaps
Find the Adjectives
Can you circle or write down the adjectives you can find?
