Seeds on the move

Seeds come from plants. When seeds are ripe they leave the plants and find a new place to grow. Seeds are of many shapes and sizes.

Seeds are moved in different ways.

Some seeds are moved by the wind. These seeds are small and light and when the wind stops blowing, these seeds fall.

Some seeds are moved by animals. Some seeds stick to the fur or wool of animals. Other seeds are eaten by animals.

Some seeds are moved by water. They float on the top of the water until they reach land.

Seeds are moved in many ways. When the seeds stop moving they can start growing. Some seeds grow into new plants.

Answer the questions.

1. Where do the seeds come from?

2. Why did seeds leave the plants?

3. How many types of seeds are there?

4. What do the seeds do when they stop moving?

5. Fill in the blanks

Some _________ are moved by animals. Some seeds stick to the ________

or wool of animals. Other seeds are ______________ by animals.

Extra for Eager: Here’s a fun activity that you can try at home if you would like

Dandelion Parachutes

The next time you go for a walk, take a look for a dandelion with a full seed head and blow it and watch all the tiny parachutes float away on the wind. Why do you think they fly so well and what is their purpose?

Let’s try to make our own parachutes:

What you will need:

Paper

Scissors

Sellotape

Paperclip (Optional)

Instructions:

Cut an A4 piece of paper lengthwise in half so you have two long strips of paper. Roll each into a tube and stick it in place with sticky tape. Drop the tubes from somewhere high. You could try to time their fall (or just note it).

Now use the scissors to cut down the tube in several places. (Maybe give one tube wide flaps and one very thin flaps.)

Drop the tubes from somewhere high and watch them fall. Does one fall faster than the other? You could also compare the speed of a tube with no flaps falling from the same height.

You can add a paperclip to the bottom to add some weight, but this is not necessary.

The boat parade

“Please hurry up!” shouted Jessica. She was so excited to get to the boat parade.

Every Summer, Jessica and her family packed some food and a blanket and went to watch the boats.

They sat at their favourite spot and set up their picnic. The boats are floating along the lakeshore. It is the summer boat parade. There are motorboats, rowboats and sailboats. Jessica’s favourite is the yellow motor boat with the flag.

The rowboat decorated with flowers is Lisa’s favourite. Tony likes the purple sailboat.

The boats float by one at a time. The people on the boats wave at the crowds. The crowds cheer for the boats.

The boat parade is so much fun to watch. It is the best part of the summer.

Answer the questions:

  1. Where are the boats floating?

  2. What kind of boats are there?

  3. What season is it in the story?

  4. What is Lisa’s favourite boat?

  5. What is the best part of Summer?

  1. Can you find words that rhyme with the following:

Say these words and then put them in the correct column in the table below.

Extra Challenge: Here’s a cool Science Experiment for you to try…

BAKING SODA POWERED BOAT

Materials

  • Empty water bottle – small

  • Baking Soda

  • Kitchen roll or tissue

  • Scissors

  • Straw

  • Vinegar

  • Tape

  • Bath or large container

  • Water

Method

  • Make a hole in the bottom end of the water bottle and poke the straw through, I trimmed mine so only used about one third of the length. Tape around the gap to stop air escaping and keep the straw in place.

  • Carefully pour some vinegar into the bottle and replace the lid.

  • Pour some baking soda onto a small piece of kitchen roll and roll it up.

  • Stand over your water, stuff the tissue wrapped baking soda into the bottle and quickly add the lid.

  • Place in the water and watch it go.

  • Can you see the bubbles come out of the end?
