It’s Magic Time Again & Dance Time

Here is another special video from Mr Seth in the senior school teaching you how you can do a magic trick with a coin.

Have a game of freeze dance with your family. Choose some of your favourite tunes and everyone shows their best dance moves. Dance until the music stops. When it does, everyone has to freeze in whatever position they find themselves in. Put the music back on and start dancing again. You could have a competition - first ‘frozen’ person to move is out, who will be the last one left in the dance?

When writing your stories remember what good writers do…

Extension:

Can you use ‘wow’ words in your story. ‘Wow’ words are more interesting words to use, for example, instead of using the word big you could say enormous

Can you use your capital letters and full stops to show each idea as a sentence. Remember we use a capital letter for the first word of the sentence. The other time we use a capital letter is when we are writing someone’s name.

Two Truths One Lie

Let’s play a game with our writing today. Can you write two facts (true things) about you and one lie?

Remember to listen to the sounds you can hear in the words you are writing, use your word card and icons above to help you.

Once you’ve written your ideas, share them with someone in your house and see if you can trick them. You could even email your teacher and see if you can trick them.

Here’s an example from Mrs Harland, can you guess which is the lie?

I have a vegetable garden at my house. There are six people that live in my home. I love chocolate.

If you guessed that the second idea was the lie, miharo! There are four people in my house, not six.

My Book Report

Have you been reading more while staying at home? What’s one of your favourite new books? Can you write a short report about it? You may want to use the template below to organise your ideas.

Once you’ve written your ideas, share them with someone in your house. Have fun!

Favourite Hairy Maclary Dog

One of Miss Tailby’s favourite books to read is ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy’

Listen to the story here. When you have listened to the story once, watch the video again and this time - choose your favourite dog from the story.

Can you write a story that describes your favourite dog from Hairy Maclary? You can also include in your story the reasons why that dog is your favourite.

Before you write: Think about each idea that you want to say in your story and count the words for your idea on your hand.

During your writing: If you get stuck or you forget which word comes next in your idea, you can always go back to the beginning and read your sentence again. This will help you remember which word comes next.

After your writing: Draw a picture of your favourite dog and read your story to the people in your home.

Here is Miss Tailby’s example:

My favourite dog from the story is Hairy Maclary. I like him because he is small and hairy. My nana’s dog looks like Hairy Maclary and he is cute.

The Monster in the Forest

There’s a monster in the forest and we want to know what happens next...

Have a look at the picture. .Is this monster a friend of a hiker or are they going to meet for the first time? What will the girl do or say? Where will the story go from there?

Before you write, remember to think about each idea. Use the icons above and your word card to help you. Remember to read your story to someone in your bubble. Have fun writing!

I had a dream…

Did you have a dream last night? Can you remember what your dream was about? Close your eyes and think about what happened in your dream. Maybe you were dancing with some fairies, or saving the world like the PJ Masks, or riding on a dinosaur's back!

Draw a picture of what happened in your dream and write a story about what happened, how you felt in your dream and what happened in the end, or when you woke up.

You can start your story off with… “I had a dream…” or “In my dream I…” or “Last night my dream was about…” or “I dreamt that…”

For example: “In my dream I was eating a yummy chocolate donut.”

We could extend this by saying, “Donut’s are my favourite and it tasted good. But when I woke up, I was chewing on my pillow!”

Remember to say your idea on your hand and use your word card to help you write your story.

When you have finished writing, read your story to someone in your family.

Then you can ask them what they dreamt about. If you want, you can draw and write a story about their dream too.

Activity 1 - Why Can’t the Ant Get on the Boat?

What happened to the boat each time an animal got on it?

Why can’t the ant get on the boat at the end?

What could have happened if one more animal got on the boat?

Discuss the different weights of the animals in the story, who do you think was the heaviest animal?

Here are some animals. Can you order them from lightest to heaviest?

Watch Mrs Virk’s video about comparing the weight of two objects in your house by holding them in your hand. Then find some toy animals or other objects around your house and compare their weights by holding one in each hand, and decide between the two objects which one is lighter, and which one is heavier.

Next, watch Miss Findlay’s video about ordering your objects from lightest to heaviest, have a go with the objects you have found.

Activity 2 - Boats

Find 2 or more small containers that you can use as a boat. Have a look through your recycling or your plastic containers in your kitchen, here are some examples of what you could use

For each container you have found, place it in a large bowl of water, and find some things of similar size to place into your boat but try not to make it sink! You could use clothes pegs.

How many things could you fit in each boat before it sank? Which boat could hold more things without sinking? Discuss why is this so?

Order your boats from the one that held the least to the one that can held the most

How many more or less could one boat hold than one other?

Activity 3 - Who is the Tallest?

Compare the following animals in terms of height and answer the questions

Activity 4 - How Many Seats on a Boat

Here are some irregular shapes named by letters from A to E. Can you count how many squares make up each shape? The more squares a shape has, the larger the area of that shape.

Which shape has the most squares, meaning it has the largest area?

Which shape has the least squares, meaning it has the smallest area?

Extension: Can you order all the shapes from the smallest area to the largest area?

Some animals need boats to go on the lake

Make two different sized boats out of straws, cardboard, paper, etc. that you can find in your house.

When you have finished your boats, the next step is to work out how many square animal seats can fit in each boat. Decide what size your seats are going to be, you need to have the same sized seats in each boat.

Cut out some squares as seats to work out how many animal seats could fit in each boat. Place your seats on your boats. Now, you can compare the seat area of each boat by counting how many seats in total in each boat.

Which boat has the smallest seat area?

Which boat has the largest seat area?

Extension: Challenge yourself to make another boat that has an even larger seat area. Will this boat need to be bigger or smaller than your other boats?

Activity 5 - Animal Footprints

Watch Mrs Ashley’s video about comparing the length of objects, and how to order from the longest to the shortest. Listen carefully to the vocabulary Miss Ashley uses, like ‘longer than’ and ‘shorter than’. Have a go at comparing the length of some objects in your house.

Draw around your foot and someone else's in your family, and cut them out

Who's the longest? Who’s the shortest?

Use your cut out foot to measure other things around the house, for example, table, sofa, mat, pillows, bed, etc. You might want to make two cut outs so you can place your foot cutouts end to end to measure accurately, like Miss Revilla does in her video with pegs

Extension: How many things can fit inside your foot cut out? For example, how many pieces of lego or bottle tops, or…. How many things can fit inside your Mum or Dad’s foot cut out?

:SCIENCE

This week we start our science topic of Sound. We will explore the concept of sound waves and vibrations through the activities below. There’s an activity for each day this week.

What is Sound?

Sound is carried by waves, not waves like in the ocean, but sound waves that are invisible to us.

Sound waves come from vibration. Vibrations are energy waves that travel through the air. There are millions of air molecules floating around everyone that we can’t see, it is these molecules that transfer the vibrations as sound waves.

Sound waves interact with our eardrums. Our eardrums vibrate and pass on the waves to our inner ear, where our brain can perceive it as sound. Sound waves traveling through the air

‘Seeing’ Sound

Let’s get started with an activity today to help us ‘see’ sound waves

Equipment:

Bowl
Gladwrap
Rice, 1 teaspoon
Metal pan/tray
Metal spoon

Instructions:

Cover the top of your bowl with gladwrap. Make sure your gladwrap is stretched tightly over the top of the bowl
Place your rice on top of the gladwrap
Now for the fun part, hold your metal pan next to the bowl, close to your bowl. Hold your pan up in the air so that it is not touching the table/surface you are working on. Bang your metal spoon against the pan like a drum and watch what happens to the rice

Did your rice move? Did it dance on the gladwrap?

What happens when you move your pan further away from the bowl, does the rice still move?

You have seen sound! What is happening is that when you hit the metal pan with the spoon, the pan vibrates. The vibrations in the pan are transferred to the air surrounding the pan, creating a sound wave. This wave is transmitted through the air molecules and causes the gladwrap to start vibrating as well, making the rice dance!

Now to try this again, but this time place 1 teaspoon of sprinkles or sugar on top of your gladwrap. Here’s a video you can watch on how to do this.

Instructions:

Place your mouth as close as you can get to the edge of your bowl, and so that your mouth is in line with the top of the bowl
Now speak directly into your gladwrap. Watch what happens to your sprinkles.

What happens if you talk quietly?

What happens if you talk loudly?

What happens if you have a go at humming right next to the edge of your bowl?

Start humming from further away and bring your mouth closer to the bowl; what happens?

Sound Waves Underwater

We know that sound travels through air, does it travel through water? Is sound louder when it travels through water? Let’s find out

Equipment:

Bucket or bowl of water
Plastic bottle e.g. 1.5L fizzy drink bottle
Craft knife or scissors
Two dinner knives

Instructions:

Fill your bucket or bowl with water
Cut the bottom of your plastic bottle. Remove the lid from the bottle
Place the bottle in the water so that the cut bottom is in the water. Now place your ear to the top of the bottle to listen
Have someone else hold the two dinner knives in the water, and then knock them against each other in the water

What do you hear?

The sound of your knives knocking against each other should be loud and clear. Sound travels faster through water than in the air, and animals that live underwater are able to hear sound clearly. This is because the water molecules more easily bump into each other, transferring the vibrations quickly and clearly.

Sound Waves to our Ears

Let’s explore another way to send sound waves through vibrations straight to our ears! If our sound waves travel through a solid object does it make the sound louder like being underwater?

Equipment:

Metal fork, or spoon
String, long enough to hang down from your ears to by your stomach

Instructions:

Tie your fork in the centre of your piece of string
Take each end of the string and wind a little bit around your pointer fingers, then push your fingers with the string around them to your ears
Let your fork dangle down in front of you so that nothing else is touching it, and then ask someone to tap your fork with an object

What do you hear?

Tap your hanging fork with different objects, does it change the sound?

You should hear a loud gonging sound or ringing in your ears! The funny thing about this is that nobody else hears it like you do.

When the fork hits another surface it vibrates. Those vibrations make the air around it move too, these are your sound waves. However, the sound waves also move up the string and allow your ears to hear it loudly. In comparison to air, the sound waves travel really well up through the string, a solid object.

Make a String Telephone

Now that we know sound waves travel well through solid objects, like a piece of string, make yourself a string telephone to share secret messages with someone else in your house

Equipment:

2 paper cups
A sharp pencil or needle to help poke holes
String

Instructions:

Cut a piece of string, 5-6 metres is an ideal length. However, it can be shorter or longer
Poke a small hole in the bottom of each cup
Thread the string through each cup and tie knots at each end to stop it pulling through the cup
With two people, each person holds a cup and moves away from each other until the string becomes tight. Make sure the string is not touching anything else
One person talks into the cup, while the other person puts their cup to their ear and listens. Can you hear each other?

What’s happening to your sound waves? When you speak into the cup it creates sound waves which are converted into vibrations at the bottom of the cup. The vibrations travel along the string and are converted back into sound waves at the other end so your other person can hear what you said.

Your string telephone shows again how sound travels better through solids such as your cup and string, allowing you to hear sounds that might be too far away when traveling through the air.

High Sounds, Low Sounds & Amplifying Sound

Skewer Sounds

Explore pitch with a skewer. Pitch can be high or low.

Equipment:

A skewer

Instructions:

With one hand hold your skewer firmly on a table top with most of it sticking out from the ta

Flick your skewer, so that it vibrates, Listen to the sound it makes
Now move your skewer so only a little bit is sticking out from the table. Flick it again, listen to the sound it makes

Which one sounded higher? Which one sounded lower?

When you flick your longer length skewer, it vibrates less and produces a lower sound

When you flick your shorter length skewer, it vibrates faster and produces a higher sound

Extra science facts: Frequency is how quickly the sound wave is moving. Frequency impacts pitch. A fast frequency will create a higher pitch. A slower frequency has a lower pitch

Balloon Amplifier Activity

Equipment:

A balloon

Instructions:

Blow your balloon up and tie a knot
Hold it and lightly tap on it, do you think you heard a loud sound or a quiet sound
Next, hold the balloon up to your ear and lightly tap on it. Is the sound louder now?

The sound is louder when you hold the balloon next to your ear. Why does this happen? When you blow the balloon up you are packing it with air molecules. They are very close together and transmit sound waves super well compared to the air just around us normally.

So when you hold the balloon up to your ear, the sound just has to get through the tightly packed molecules in the balloon and we hear a louder sound. It is amplified.
