My name is Andrea Tapia-Castro. I have been apart of the theater community ever since I was a little girl. Theater became a big part of my life and I am so excited to be able to show you how to incorporate it into your core classes!
Define theater
Importance of theater in core classes
Examples for each core class
Watch the video above for information about what theatre is!
Theatre is a buidling that allows for creativity to flow. It is used for art. Incorporating theater or art into the classroom can be beneficial to the students' learning (Goldberg, 2021). Everyone has different learning styles and theatre or art is a great way to blend them. It has been stated how “active learners tend to retain and understand information best by doing something active with it” (Irwansyah, 2019). It is a combination of many learning styles.
With technology at our fingertips, you can use theatre in the classroom without ever having to leave. Many videos are accessible to teachers in any subject. Wilson discusses with how the education system is rapidly changing, teachers should change with it (2018). This is shown with the increased use of Boxlight or Smart Boards, as well as the addition of chromebooks to the lesson. Chrombooks make it easier for students to do their lessons in core classes (Douglas & Jaquith, 2018).
The important thing is to remember how to relate the play or video relates to the class. For example, in middle school the students read Romeo and Juliet, and there are so many modern adaptions that could be used instead of the original. Then the following activity could be to compare the two. Gibson goes into further detail about how using plays and theatre with the core classes can engage students much better (2020). For science, many teachers used The Lion king to discuss different habitats and how they drastically change and how different they are all. For social studies, you can discuss the movie My Friend Martin to talk about the differect cultures and how important Martin Luther King jr is (Stagg & Verde, 2019).
You will now be doing a mock intregationg of theatre in the classroom. This is just one way you can add something to make your students think outside the box.
1) Romeo & Juliet
2) All of the above
Theatre is a great way to incorporate multiple learning styles into the classrooms. In Literature, you can easily have the students recreate scenes from plays, this will involve hands on, and auditory learners. You can also add worksheets for movies you watch and have them relate to the core subject. This helps the students who need to write things down to learn. Everything is just one click away.
