What is Common Core?
Key Ideas
-Common Core is a set of standards.
-These standards do not dictate how teachers must teach the content.
-Not federally mandated
-Parents, educators, students, and politicians all have differing opinions
What is the purpose of Common Core?
-Expand on English language arts and math to give students deeper knowledge
-Prep students for their future and put American schools on a more equal playing field to other country's schools
-prepare students for competition in the workforce.
Why is Common Core so controversial?
-Teachers in 46 states were forced to change their teaching methods quickly
-Students had to learn a completely new way of understanding concepts that they were familiar with
-Some parents thought Common Core made familiar concepts overcomplicated and difficult
