Hello everyone! My name is Alyssa Brown and I am an ELEMENTARY education major. Although I am a military brat, I have been in Virginia for almost half of my life. Since I have spent my childhood moving around so much, I have become very close to my family at a young age, which I am thankful for. I come from a family of 6: My mom, dad, and my three sisters. Later down the road, my family has decided to add on two additions, my dog, Flynn Rider, and my cat, Oreo. Besides being family oriented, I absolutely love working with kids. Being a full-time student and worker has taken up a majority of my time; however, I love to spend the little free time I have doing arts and crafts. Most of all, I especially love to spend my free time pre-making arts and craft ideas for my kids at work to do after school.
Being a teacher is not just about teaching children to make them more knowledgable; it is setting children up for success. It is being the one person there for each child, no matter what is going on in their life. It is developing a relationship enough to prepare your students for the real world. What I do know is that if you provide your students with a safe and welcoming environment, they will become more welcoming and accepting of other children in the classroom.
Working with children means that we are challenged to work with children from all backgrounds. To become an effective teacher, I would need to learn how to work with children according to their needs. Sometimes students will come from cultures that are not fortunate enough to have an education, so building a new foundation for children from all ethnicities will be challenging.
After working with children of all ages for several years, I have already seen some changes in the way I teach. At one point, I believed that the best way to teach is by using the perennialism and essentialism techniques. After learning how to speak to children according to their ages and developing relationships with the children, I have noticed that the educational philosophies that work best for me are progressivism and existentialism. I believe that children will work best in groups, where they will be able to bounce ideas off of one another. I believe that the purpose of school is not only to expand intellectual abilities, but also to learn how to communicate with one another. This is the time for students to develop social experiences with one another. I think that the most important thing for my students to learn is how to develop relationships with classmates and to work as a team. Not everything has to be done alone... I want them to rely on one another both as a friend and as a classmate! The way I will interact with my students is that I will be there to inform them during lecture time, however, I will be there to guide them through their process of working things out together. Of course, I do still believe that there needs to be structure in a classroom and respect from the students, but I also believe that allowing my students to express their own ideas and opinions is important. One word to describe myself as a teacher would be empathetic, and one word to describe my students would be achievers.

I loved how you explained that when you provide a safe and welcoming space to your students they will be welcoming and accepting to you. Children love to feel heard and accepted. I think those qualities make a great elementary school teacher.
Hi Alyssa! I love your page. Your fur babies are adorable, and the name Flynn Rider has me cracking up because I love Tangled. Like you, I also want to provide a safe and welcoming enviroment for my students. I think that having your students trust you is one of the most important aspects of becoming a teacher. Another similar view we have is that not only do we want the children to trust and rely on us, but also each other. We want our students to know that they have other resources out there for them in times of need. I look forward to seeing your page come together! - Sam Myers
Hi Alyssa!
I have 5 sisters! Unfortunately, I didn't get to grow up in the house with them. My grandparents raised me so I spent most of my life as an only child. I did get to visit them every summer though! I am also an arts and crafts kind of girl! Maybe we can collaborate! I am always looking for fun projects to do with my students! You sound like you are going to be an amazing teacher! Good luck with everything! - Arlissa Gallant
Hi Alyssa,
I love how you changed your philosophy after talking with the kids! It really shows how you put the children first.

Hi Alyssa,
I enjoyed reading your page and is pleasing to the eye. The way you describe your future classroom sounds like you are going to be a great teacher and the students will enjoy having you as a teacher. I also want my students to be able to build those social and problem-solving skills.

Hello Alyssa!
I enjoyed reading and learning about you! I also am part of a military family, although me and my siblings did not travel with my father. I also love arts and crafts! I always am on pinterest thinking of what I would do in my classroom. I also do need to learn how to be able to teach to all students of different background. I am sure that after we take the necessary classes and have more classroom experience, we will feel more confident in our skills to teach to all students. I also enjoyed the pictures you included, as well as the bitmojis!
Hey Alyssa, I found it cool that you mentioned that students should use this time to build social relationships with one another. The ability to form bonds with peers and function as a team is what I believe my kids need to learn most. You don't have to work alone on everything. -Ashlyn Hodge
Your fur babies are so cute! I completely agree with your sentiment that communication in the classroom is important. Students should learn to work in a group because most times in our lives are spent communicating with others. If school is meant to prepare students for the future, learning effective communication is important.
Hi Alyssa, your cat is adorable- I just recently adopted a cat (her name is Nala). I see you are very passionate about working with kids, and I hope you carry out your vision of an ideal classroom. I think it is very important to act as a guide for students rather than a dictator. We must be accepting of every student that enters our classrooms and be patient with them as they create their own story. -Jalon King
