ways to assist their students.
$ Future teachers should be able to show empathy and become conscious of the community they work for
The NASSP states that, “the lack of health and nutrition can negatively impact concentration and learning (National association of secondary school principals, 2021). Having a small vocabulary can cause a lack of participation. Living in a rough situation can diminish motivation and cause a student to have low expectations of themselves (Jensen, 2013). Family is a big factor; parents could be working too much to help with homework. The stress of it all, whether it be a few of these reasons or all could become too much. According to the National Dropout Prevention Center, 10% of dropouts come from poverty-stricken families.
You may be wondering ...
How can
I Help?
Have Expectations
. Students might not have any expectations for themselves. Professors Harmon and Jensen agree motivation and high expectations can give a student hope. They can take this with them throughout their other classes and in life (Harmon,2019).
Give Feedback
. Giving feedback is always good, it's encouraging to know when you are improving (Jensen,2013).
Establish Relationships
Pennies For Their Thoughts
Show you Care!
You are going to come across many students with different backgrounds as future teachers we have to be understanding of students' situations. This would entail shutting down bullying. The second confession could have been solved by the teacher having backup gifts. When doing a gift exchange, the possibility of someone not being able to afford a gift should be thought about. Also, acknowledge your students' feelings and let them know you are listening. Be caring as well as professional, the teacher from the third slide really showed a lack of professionalism. The teacher not only embarrassed the student she harshly judged. The student's parents could only afford that particular type of heating. The teachers in the confessions are not who you want to be! Communication and understanding are key. Show your students that you acknowledge their feelings and are without judgment (Morin, 2022).
In Conclusion
teachers should be aware and understanding of the effects poverty has on their students. Teachers should be an encouraging and helpful ear to students inside the classroom. There are many programs available to assist parents/guardians as teachers and we should always be knowledgeable of them.
