About Me
I am originally from Springfield, MA, where I spent most of mine time until I was in my early twenties. I have received a Bachelors Degree in Business Management from Western New England College in 2007. I have lived in 6 other states including Massachusetts; Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, California, and now Virginia. I met my wife while living in Florida in 2011. We have one son that is 2 and another due April 2023. I have spent the last 8 years working in the insurance industry. I have worked also in the hospitality industry, for a manager at the Basketball Hall of Fame, group homes as a Residential Case Worker, at a Winery, and as a Coach for youth and High School sports. After many years in the business world I found my job just as a job not a career. That is when I reflected and found the days I enjoyed the most were in a position where I could make a difference and help individuals in creating a foundation for their future. That is when I decided to make the change to pursue my education degree one year ago. As I am finishing my degree I have taken a position as a Long Term Substitute in Norfolk Public Schools, where I am teaching History and Civics for the 2022-2023 school year. In my free time I enjoy cooking, hiking, going to the beach, fishing, and playing golf.
What I Know
When I decided to make the change to teaching I reflected on my past schooling. I thought of my own personal struggles in middle school. I did okay through elementary school but struggled with some subjects in middle school. I was not receiving the help and learning assistance from my teachers that I needed. When I was finally placed with teachers that recognized my shortfalls and strengths in my learning abilities and processing, not only did my self-confidence grow, but I began to retain lessons, understand what I was reading and overall have a more successful learning experience. This because these teachers set me up to be successful with their assistance of breaking down much of the materials. blocks that I could continually build into being more proficient. By “chunks” I mean I was not so overloaded with materials at one time that I became frustrated and wanted to give up. I was given a lot of positive reinforcement and challenged to want to succeed. Some of my teachers would even work with me one on one. They taught me how to study, how to take notes in class and how to listen for key phrases when a lesson is being taught. Thinking of my personal experiences and the help I received during my struggles in middle school. Not only did my learning improve, my self-confidence became solid and I was not embarrassed or afraid to be called on or respond to a question.
Using my past experience in school and my experiences in various jobs it has created a foundation for me to use in my classroom. I have learned that students learn in different ways and you need to include various lesson and learning styles to be able to for students to understand the information your are teaching. I plan to be that teacher that gets to know and understand my students. Know some of their likes, dislikes, as well as family background, so I as Mr. B will be able to make a connection with them. A connection we can build a learning rapport together. I want to get to know my students not only as the individuals they are, but know how they learn. I learned in working as a coach and caseworker by making that personal connection and having the rapport with your students you can help them to grow and to reach their potential.

What I have to learn
I know as a new teacher there is some naiveté or thoughts of grandeur or big accomplishments that I can go in an make a difference right away. But I have realized that is not true through my first semester as a teacher. Though I have thoroughly enjoy my change in the the teaching profession, it has been quite a learning curve. Time Management and Classroom Management have been some of the biggest challenges. I realize that at times I do forget the time I have allocated for teaching a certain section of the lesson. It creates time were I might have to adjust practice time to make sure I have provided all the information for the day. With classroom management I need to understand same as adults not all kids are going to be having a good day and stay on task. I am having to learn to adjust or talk with those students on an individual level to help develop solutions to get them through the period and help them on a personal level. One other item is coming up with creative ways to meet the students needs of today. Teaching History and Civics to individuals is not always the easiest so trying to think outside of the box to the ways I was taught has been a challenge. I have enjoyed being thrown right in to teaching my own classes as the teacher or record. Though it was not what I accepted when I applied to be a Substitute, it is rewarding hearing students tell me that they enjoy my class and some state I am one of their favorite teachers.
Teacher I Will Become
My obligation to my students is to provide a safe environment both in the physical place of lessons and in the learning within my classroom. I want my students not to be afraid to raise their hand to ask a question, offer an opinion or just to say “Mr. B., I don’t understand.” I want my students to be inquisitive, want to learn, discover, and learn from any mistakes or incorrect answers. As a teacher I will provide my students with tools, lessons, I will model and teach the basic civilities of our society and not force my opinions on my students, but teach them to develop their own. As I see myself using Existentialism and Progressivism approach to my teaching. By allowing students to think formulate their own opinions and collaborate and learn from each other.

Hi Dan! I enjoyed reading your page and can definitely relate to you when you mentioned that you have lived in several places. I think that you having lots of experience in different jobs/careers is kind of cool because it provides you with different skills that you can apply throughout your classroom. It also shows that you are passionate in what you do now as a long-term sub since you were so willing to switch to a job that allows you to create a foundation for the youth. We need more passionate teachers in the world! -Alyssa Brown
