Hello! I am Ma'Kyia Frazier. My major is Dance Education. I have been dancing since I was 3. I didn't begin training until I was about 8-9. I attended a gifted program for dance named Brickwell Academy in Virginia Beach when I was 8. This is where I was trained to be the confident dancer that I am today and gained the inspiration to be a educator much like my dance instructors. I have always loved dance, but I loved choreography more. I began my choreography journey when I attended my high school, Salem High School, which has a Visual and Performing Arts Academy for Dance, Theatre, Art, Instrumental, and Vocal. During my time at Salem, we had classes where we could choreograph and produce our own concerts. These classes gave me the opportunity to give someone else my ideas and style. It was a rough start, but I loved it either way. After that class, all I could think about was creating and teaching classes. I applied to Old Dominion University as a Dance Education major so I can become an extraordinary educator for artistic students.
In my dance journey I have taught people ages 5 to 50. They either had a lot of dance training or zero dance training. From teaching I know how to be understanding and knowledge of what may be a challenge for someone. I always ask during my classes if they need a break, if they have questions, and if they're doing something new. More the often the answer is always yes and I have no problem taking extra time to give my help. I do add moments of difficulty whether its within the movement or going against the music. I use those moments as opportunities for the students or dancers to learn a new skill.
I have learned over the years of working with children and people without any dance experience I need to learn how to be more patient and attentive of those that need more help then others. I was used to teaching people that already had dance training. When I had to teach 30-50 year old elementary teachers tiktok dances for my community service hours, I found it hard to take the time to go over the material little by little and being more detailed. It takes away a lot of time and energy, but what matters is that the person has a better understanding and feels more comfortable asking for help when they really need it. I need to learn as a teacher that I need to be patient with those who are needing more clarity.
It sounds like you have a real passion for dance , its so awesome to read about a different art .- Diamond
I think dance education is so cool! I had to take a couple of dance appreciation and dance history classes earlier on in college. I really enjoyed learning about it and realized that there is soooo much I don't know but am fascinated by! Keep creating babes! Happy dancing : ))
I was a dancer for about 10 years and it really is a beautiful art form. I agree with you that teaching requires an immense amount of patience and that is an important skill to learn and continue to practice as we go through our lives.
I love your passion for dancing. I used to love dancing myself even though I was horrible and untrained at it. I always wanted to learn ballroom dancing. I loved your creative page with all the images and features highlighting your creativity and love for dancing. I look forward to working with you in group. Have a great day. All my best wishes for you in your pursuits. Sincerely, Jeffrey Marcus
I like how you described the struggles of teaching elementary kids but followed it by saying you enjoyed it anyway. I appreciated that honest confession. - Sarah Barkhurst
