Scenario/Questions
Each student would conduct research on and present a report on a self-selected topic as part of an individual research project that the teacher had planned for the class. The instructor chooses to have the students conduct and present their study in groups instead. For middle school kids, the group method is probably particularly beneficial because it:
a) enhances the students' sense of participation in the project and overall learning effectiveness.
b) allows students who often perform at different levels to reach a level comparable to their high-achieving colleagues in the class.
c) utilizes a student's interest in social relationships to promote engagement and motivation in the learning process.
d) encourages students to investigate wider, more complicated topics using a wider range of techniques and strategies.
The following conditions increase the likelihood that students will be organically driven to learn and master subject matter:
a) students are aware that they will soon be tested on their comprehension of the material.
b) have a sense of interest in and a connection to their work and lives.
c) think that their work is better than those of peers doing the identical job.
d) believe that achieving learning goals will result in receiving positive reinforcement.
