Explain what activities are considered extracurricular.
Know what effects activity has on student behavior and academic performance.
Provide examples of how educators can incorporate extracurricular activities within the classroom.
Activities that are outside the scope of a student’s normal curriculum are considered extracurricular or extra-academic activities. Outside of the classroom this can look like clubs, organized sports, and other physical activities both competitive and non-competitive. While as an extension of classroom activities, this can be volunteering in the community (Whalen et al., 2016).
Teachers can offer cost free ways to gain some of the same skills and a sense of belonging by doing community service as a class. This would offer the same opportunity to gain social skills with not only your peers but people of all ages and backgrounds, and in turn students gain the possibility of added social and emotional support from a new group of people (Feldman & Matjasko, 2005).
In classroom activities, such as taking breaks throughout the day for movement during lessons is effective for mental rest and to keep students from being sedentary the entire day.
Provide information on community resources for parents to get their children involved in activities outside of school.
