Welcome everyone!
My name is Heather Johnson, I am a mother, wife, sister, daughter, aunt, and friend to some of my most favorite people! I was born in Seoul, South Korea to parent's who served in the U.S. Army. When I was about 2 years old we came home to the U.S. where I grew up and graduated high school in Chesterfield, VA (Richmond). When I'm not chasing toddlers or doing school work I love to garden and spend time outdoors. A few years back I decided to try my hand to growing my own food and found it to be thoroughly relaxing, not to mention the money my family's saved in produce since starting. I haven't quite perfected my winter crops, but my entire family loves being involved in the process.
My goal as a future educator is to create a space where learning is not viewed as mundane or hard. I will give students a chance to feel heard and be a part of their learning experience, not just stand and dictate the entirety of their days. It's important to me that my students will not only gain knowledge to successfully pass, but be informed about the community we're a part of and want to be involved.
As a K-5 teacher I feel that a mix of both teacher and student-centered lessons would be beneficial. Allowing my students to have a say in items we are learning or experiencing in the classroom can help keep them engaged, when it's appropriate.
Hi Heather! I really love the flashing question mark backdrop on your slide. I also believe that being willing to learn is something it takes to be a teacher. It is also a great idea to change the some of the negative thoughts on learning. I have met many people who say they aren't/weren't "school people" for the exact reasons that you mentioned. I also want to mix student-centered and teacher-centered modeling in my classroom. -Faith Pitt
Hi Heather, I have also tried growing my own food but I was not very successful outside of green onion and peppers. I like how you want to have a mix of teacher and student-centered lessons. Having students that learn in various styles that will help to make a difference in reaching each child, also to help keep them engaged in the lessons. I love your photos and how colorful you page is. -Dan
