Who I am
I am a senior at Old Dominion University, majoring in Elementary Education. I have previously attended Radford University and Southwest Virginia Community College, where I obtained my associates degree in applied psychology. I currently live in Russell County, VA with my husband, dog, cat, hamster and two turtles (all pictured to the right). I am a substitute teacher for Russell county and have experience with PreK all the way through 7th grade! My favorite hobbies are traveling, reading and listening to music. I listen to several genres of music but my current guilty pleasure is Kpop!
What I know
I absolutely love nature. I think it is so peaceful and calming. I would love to incorporate nature into my classroom. Below are some of my favorite classroom ideas so far (most of them I've gotten from Pinterest)!
For me, deciding to become a teacher took a lot of time and thinking. I have tried several other majors in the past before I took time off of school to substitute teach. I absolutely loved being in the classroom and knew that being a teacher was what I wanted to do. I have learned through many other inspirational teachers that being a great teacher comes with many different practices. First and foremost, you are a role model for your students. It is so important that you show them love and compassion while building relationships with them. You never know what kind of things are going on at home so welcoming them in with open arms and a loving atmosphere can make all the difference to a student.
What I have to learn
I would say I have a lot to learn as do most of us. Teaching is a forever evolving job so learning while you go is always going to happen. For me personally, I want to learn more ways to keep teaching fun and engaging for my students. I find that when the students are actually interested and having fun they tend to retain information better. Also I would like to learn ways to take a stand against things that could potentially hurt our students learning, Such as banning books! It is so important that teachers be the voices of the students and speak up!
The teacher I will become
In the future I hope to become a teacher that will have a personal relationship with each of my students. I want them to feel comfortable enough to come talk to me about anything and understand that I will be accepting of them no matter the circumstance. As far as education in the class room goes, Existentialism is what I lean toward within educational philosophies. It is so important that children have their own freedom to be who they want to be and find their own creativity. I think that using real life experiences for my students goes a long way, so the use of things like experiments, hands-on learning, and field trips are super important. I also want to try and keep my students engaged possible by using their current interests such as games and movies, etc.

Hi, Taylor,
The page was not allowing me to make comments, so I added this text box for comments. Sorry.
I also believe having love and compassion for students goes a long way with building relationships. Your desire to give students a safe space to learn will enhance the learning and growth. Making learning fun will have a lasting impact on your students and you will be the classroom that students want to be in. All the best in your journey. PS. Thanks for your comments. Tracy Pouncie
