Course overview - Study Period 1 and 2
During the first half term, study period 1, learners will read the novella ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell. Learners will explore, analyse and interpret the language used by Orwell to develop his characters and themes. Learners will develop their contextual understanding of the novella throughout the study period. Learners will also discuss the novella's key issues, linking these to current debates.
During the second half term, study period 2, learners will explore various important world issues to inspire them to develop their non-fiction writing. Learners will explore what makes an effective piece of non-fiction writing and how they can use these examples to develop their own use of vocabulary, linguistic and structural devices. Learners will also be developing their technical writing skills such as: spelling, punctuation and grammar. Learners will also be developing their speaking and listening skills through class debates.

Assessment Points:
Learners will complete 3 pieces of written work per half term that they will receive feedback for. Two of these will be shorter, mini assessments and the final one will be more reflective of a GSCE style longer essay question.
Learners will also have multiple opportunities for formative assessments. These include Google quizzes, Q and A and recall activities.
Guidance:
Learners will receive guidance in a variety of ways. These include marked assessments, reports, verbal feedback, written feedback in books, 1:1 interaction, Google Classroom and whole class feedback.
