What is culture?

Culture can be defined as all the behaviours, ways of life, arts, beliefs and institutions of a population that are passed down from generation to generation. Culture has been called "the way of life for an entire society".

During this PBL term, our class is going to explore traditions and customs of Australia, Korea, Japan and Spain. Have fun!

Week 1

This week we learnt about how to work in groups and participated in some cultural workshops to get a taste of the specific and unique language people use in Singapore and experienced Capoeira, a combination of martial arts and music developed by Western African slavery.

Week 2

As we stepped into Week 2 of PBL, we continued to learn about the culture in Australia and Korea.

On Monday and Tuesday, we explored some iconic buildings in both Australia and Korea.

  • For Australia,

We discovered some interesting facts about the famous Sydney Opera House. Then we moved on to creating 3D Sydney Opera House models.

  • For South Korea,

We researched some iconic buildings in the capital of South Korea, Seoul. Seoul is a mix of old and new. There are modern buildings like the 63 Building and the N Seoul Tower. There are also ancient palaces, such as Gyeongbokgung Palace. We also built a Seoul City model together.

  • For Spain and Japan,

Miss. Lam introduced some general information about Spain and Japan and 1D students set a theme for the country they have chosen.

On Wednesday, we touched on traditional food in both Australia and Korea and made some food models.

Here is some of our outstanding work:

On Thursday and Friday, we carried out some research on Aussie animals and learnt about their habitats and created some Aussie animal display.

For Korea groups, we looked into some Korean festivals and learnt their importance. Look at these Korean paper drums we made in class!

Week 3

This week our Korea groups started off practising traditional arts and dance. We made our own Korean fans and learnt a traditional dance. On Wednesday, we decorated some lanterns with traditional korean patterns and wrote our wish cards to hang on them to get a taste of Seoul Lantern Festival.

On the other hand, our little Aussie kiddos learnt to be a true Aussie by acquiring some common Aussie lingo. We even created an Aussie lingo gameboard. We can't wait for you to try it! On the following day, we explored the aboriginal culture and learnt about the life of Aborigines. They were the first people living in Australia! We appreciated the aboriginal arts and had a chance to make our own boomerangs. Look at how much fun we had doing the dot paintings on the boomerangs!

For Spain and Japan,

This week, 1D students have learned how to use mindmaps to organize information they found online. Besides, we have also created some visuals for presentation.

Week 4

Final week of PBL this week.
We have been practising and rehearsing for the final Showcase Day this Saturday. See how serious we are in the photos!
