A note from our Principal...

Dear CAO Students and Families,

This past week, we discussed goal setting and self-directed learning. Students set goals, select strategies that will allow them to meet those goals, and practice and show those strategies to eventually see if their plan worked. The self-directed learning cycle is the process by which students set a goal, plan, learn, show and reflect on the process. This learning cycle can be applied to any task in the adult world and is developed across all aspects of Summit Learning.

Summit Learning schools dedicate specific time to self directed learning. Students are able to practice the self-directed learning cycle in Mentoring and Projects. Students prepare for projects by learning information, accessing additional resources and taking content assessments in order to understand the material deeply. Since the material is self-paced, students have to build plans to pass the required content assessments. As they learn, students see direct evidence of the benefits of the self-directed learning cycle and build learning strategies that they can then transfer to new situations.

Ask your student about the short- and long-term goals they have set at school. Log into the Platform to track your student’s progress. View this goal-setting as critical for not only their journey to graduation, but their journey into adulthood.

We are currently preparing for the 2019-20 school year. In the next few weeks, we will enroll students through an Open House, on February 6, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and possibly a lottery. We do not anticipate much growth in our student population, while we expand our programming to the three-day a week workshop program and utilizing all of our new space. Once enrollment is completed for the 2019-20 school year, we will have course selection meetings to choose your schedule for next year.

Students interested in participating in Spring Sports should plan on attending the Spring Sports meeting on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in Caiman Hall at CAHS. More information is posted in the updates on Schoology.

Finally, all students should complete MAP assessments this upcoming week in the Self Directed Learning area or in workshops. Please confirm your completion of MAP assessments with your cohort teacher.

Let's make it a great week! Please let us know how we can help.

Community News

CAMS is looking for Tutors!

Classical Academy Middle School is looking for High School Students who might be good writing and math tutors, who understand the summit platform and willing to help out some middle school students.  You would be recommended to parents as private tutors, and it could be an opportunity to get tutoring experience.  And if you choose to volunteer your time, you could use it for Community Service Hours!

If you are interested, you need to be in good academic standing, recommended by teachers (formal recommendations aren't necessary), and willing to work demonstrate patience and flexibility while working with younger students.

Contact Sarah Pierce for more information: spierce@classicalacademy.com
