CONTEXT
This module was about the reproductive system. The reproductive system is the organ system responsible for producing offspring by generating sex cells, facilitating fertilization, and in females, supporting pregnancy and childbirth. This module, aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of conditions affecting the male and female reproductive systems, including pathologic obstetrics, benign and malignant gynecologic conditions, and male reproductive disorders. It emphasized integrating epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, morphology, diagnostic work-up, and management, preparing us for clinical clerkship and future medical practice. As a result, the following outcomes were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), fostering collaboration (PO5), and applying a systematic approach to problem-solving (PO6).
EXPERIENCE
First, the lectures helped build my foundational knowledge and strengthened my ability to understand and explain disease processes, directly contributing to clinical competence (PO1). Topics such as hormonal regulation, infertility, and gynecologic malignancies became more organized and clinically relevant through these sessions. Second, SGDs played a significant role in reinforcing both clinical competence (PO1) and the use of a systematic approach (PO6). Through case-based discussions, I was able to apply theoretical knowledge, formulate differential diagnoses, and correlate clinical findings with underlying pathophysiology. In addition, serving as a secretary for one case further enhanced my experience, as it required me to actively listen, organize information, and document the group’s discussion clearly, contributing to collaboration (PO5). This role also pushed me to ensure that the discussion remained structured and aligned with the objectives. Lastly, laboratory sessions complemented these learning activities by allowing me to visualize histologic structures and correlate them with disease states, strengthening both clinical competence (PO1) and systematic thinking (PO6). Overall, each activity contributed in a distinct but interconnected way to achieving the intended outcomes.
REFLECTION
First, I realized that I was able to demonstrate clinical competence (PO1) not only through understanding concepts but also through applying them during SGDs. However, I noticed that I sometimes relied on memorization rather than fully understanding the rationale behind certain management decisions. This made me realize that true clinical competence involves deeper comprehension and the ability to think critically, not just recall information. Second, in terms of collaboration (PO5), I recognized that I tend to hesitate when I am unsure of my answers. This made me reflect on how collaboration is not just about participation, but also about being willing to share thoughts, even if they are not fully formed, as this can contribute to collective learning. Lastly, for the use of a systematic approach (PO6), I recognized how SGDs trained me to approach cases step-by-step, from identifying key clinical features to forming differential diagnoses and planning management. This helped me feel less overwhelmed when dealing with complex cases.
ACTION
First, I plan to improve my clinical competence by focusing on deeper understanding rather than memorization. I will make a conscious effort to analyze the rationale behind disease mechanisms and management strategies, and to integrate concepts across different subjects. Second, to enhance collaboration, I will challenge myself to participate more actively in discussions, even when I feel unsure. I want to develop more confidence in expressing my thoughts and to view mistakes as part of the learning process rather than something to avoid. Lastly, for the systematic approach, I plan to consistently practice structured clinical reasoning by using frameworks during both SGDs and self-study. I will train myself to approach every case in a step-by-step manner until it becomes a habit, even under time constraints.
EVALUATION
Overall, I believe that my performance in this module was good, as I was able to meet the basic expectations in terms of participation, understanding, and engagement. I was able to demonstrate clinical competence through my grasp of the topics, collaborate effectively with my group, and apply a systematic approach during case discussions. However, I also recognize that there is still significant room for growth. My tendency to rely on memorization and hesitation in group discussions are areas that need improvement. Despite these, I am aware of these gaps and am willing to work on them. Thus, this module not only strengthened my knowledge of the reproductive system but also helped me better understand my learning habits and areas for development. Moving forward, I aim to become more confident, more analytical, and more consistent in applying what I have learned, as I continue my journey toward becoming a competent and well-rounded physician.
