CONTEXT
This module tackled blood and hemostasis, utilizing small group discussions, lectures, and laboratory exercises to comprehensively discuss the production, properties, and functions of blood and its components. Blood, produced in the bone marrow, involves the differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells into red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets, all integral to the processes of hemostasis and coagulation. The module successfully achieved objectives such as the demonstration of clinical competence (PO1), leadership and group management (PO3), and collaboration (PO5).
EXPERIENCE
The module was quite similar to my previous hematology classes during pre-med, which made me happy as I was familiar with the topics in comparison to the anatomy-heavy block 3 modules. First, through our laboratory exercises, I was able to apply my knowledge as we performed the hematocrit and hemoglobin tests, bleeding time, clotting time, and tourniquet tests (PO1). Being a medtech student during the pandemic with limited face-to-face experience, I was grateful for the opportunity to revisit these methods. Second, during this session, each medtech groupmate was paired with another member who had a different pre-med, so that we could guide them during each process (PO3). In line with this, I was able to teach some of my groupmates how to perform venipuncture for the first time. It made me so happy being able to hear and see their faces of awe. Anika was actually one of the people who I taught, and it made me so proud when she was able to successfully collect blood during her 1st try. Lastly, through our small group discussions, I was able to lead the 2nd case, participate more, and share what I knew from my pre-med about hematology as well as some of my tips and tricks with the group (PO5).
REFLECTION
First, I realized that although hematology is a topic that I had encountered before, I should not be complacent with my studying. As I read through my notes for the upcoming exam, it struck me that there were alot of things that I had already forgotten. Through this, I also learned the importance of understanding the lesson deeper in terms of clinical applications, specifically the test interpretations and the skills involved. Second, I learned that being able to help my groupmates in the areas that they are unfamiliar with gives me a sense of joy and fulfillment. Medicine is a difficult journey, and I would love to help them and others as well in any way I can. Lastly, by collaborating and sharing what each of us knew in the group, especially those who have taken medtech, I was able to have a deeper understanding of the components of blood, their functions, the process of hemostasis as well as the extrinsic and intrinsic pathways of coagulation which ultimately result in fibrin clot formation.
ACTION
First, I plan to review my notes regularly to reinforce my understanding of blood production, properties, and functions as well as hematologic test implications. I also plan on incorporating more active recall study techniques in order to promote more long-term retention. Second, with the upcoming modules, if ever there are topics or skills that I feel confident in, I aim to continue to offer my assistance to my groupmates who may find those areas challenging through sharing my medtech notes and other resources as well as helping them with their skills. Lastly, I also plan on keeping an open-mind and seeking guidance from others if ever there are topics or methods that I am unfamiliar or confused with in the future, so that I too can learn from them.
EVALUATION
In conclusion, the journey through the hematology module was refreshing, helping me remember forgotten topics and revealing my weaknesses. In spite of recognizing my complacency, I maintained a positive attitude towards learning and emphasized the importance of understanding over memorization. Overall, I really enjoyed this module as it allowed me to refine my rusty skills in performing hematologic tests and find joy in assisting others, all while sharing valuable insights from my pre-med experiences.
