CONTEXT
This module talks about the male and female reproductive systems. The reproductive system is a collection of organs and tissues involved in the production of offspring. Its primary function is to enable sexual reproduction, which involves the fusion of male and female gametes (sperm and egg) to create a new organism. In addition to reproduction, the reproductive system also plays a role in hormone production and sexual differentiation. This module covers the normal embryology, anatomy (gross and microscopic), and physiology of the male and female reproductive system, as well as normal pregnancy and care of the pregnant woman. As a result, the following program outcomes (POs) were achieved: demonstrate clinical competence (PO1), collaboration (PO5), and engaging in personal and professional development (PO7).
EXPERIENCE
I found this module quite difficult due to its heavy reliance on memorization. Contrary to the past modules that had a lot of physiology, understanding the intricate details of anatomical structures, physiological processes, and embryology developmental timelines required extensive memorization of terminology, diagrams, and sequential events. As a result, the vast amount of information sometimes led me to feeling overwhelmed. However, despite the challenges I faced, I was still able to learn from this module. Throughout the module, various activities were incorporated in order to achieve the program outcomes. Clinical competence was showcased through hands-on activities like studying anatomical models and histological slides. These practical engagements helped me have a deeper understanding of the anatomical structures and physiological processes relevant to the reproductive system (PO1). Through our group discussions, we not only shared our insights but also notes and study strategies which helped in the retention of information. Additionally, working collectively allowed for enhanced learning, clarification of doubts, and mutual support (PO5). Because of the heavy memorization, I was more proactive in my learning and self-improvement in this module. Strategies such as breaking down complex information, creating visual aids, and watching youtube videos were some of the things I did which facilitated a deeper understanding of the material and enhanced my overall learning experience (PO7).
REFLECTION
First, I realized that my active engagement in hands-on learning experiences such as studying anatomical models, analyzing histological slides, making diagrams, as well as critical thinking during SGD provided me with a better understanding of the male and female reproductive systems, laying a solid foundation for future clinical practice. My proactiveness and growth mindset definitely helped me move past my initial dislike and difficulty of the module. Second, I realized that I liked having dynamic group discussions and study sessions as I had the opportunity to exchange ideas, delve into complex concepts, and collectively solve problems with my peers. This collaborative environment not only broadened my perspectives but also honed my teamwork skills which are essential for navigating various healthcare settings. By working with others, I also gained a lot of valuable insights and fostered meaningful connections. Lastly, I learned about the importance of having the desire to grow oneself especially when faced with difficulty. Throughout this module, I was able to learn about new strengths and weaknesses within me that helped me identify areas for improvement and set personalized learning goals. This proactive approach enabled me to tailor my study strategies, embrace a growth mindset, and seek out opportunities for further personal and academic development.
ACTION
Based on my reflections and learning from this module, first, I plan to further develop my clinical competence and knowledge by giving more time for my self study as well as setting aside my distractions, such as watching netflix, that hinder me from being focused. Second, I plan on improving my clinical skills such as practicing the steps of Leopold's maneuver and breast examination as well as learning how to discuss sensitive reproductive topics in a professional manner with patients and colleagues. Lastly, I aim to continue to keep up my growth mindset and ability to stay motivated to learn despite my struggles with complex topics. I hope to find new study strategies as well that can help me develop my memorization skills.
EVALUATION
Reflecting on my attitude and performance in the module, I acknowledge both strengths and areas for improvement. Despite my initial difficulty and dislike for some topics in the module, I still continued to approach the learning activities with enthusiasm and curiosity. I noticed that I actively participated more in the discussions of this module and was not afraid to seek clarification when needed. However, I recognize the need to further enhance my understanding of certain complex concepts and refine my critical thinking and memorization skills. By continually striving for growth and learning, I hope to overcome these challenges as I stay committed to enhancing my knowledge and skills as a dedicated healthcare professional in the future.
