CONTEXT
This module was about the Hematopoietic System. This is the body system responsible for the production, maturation, and regulation of blood cells including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets primarily within the bone marrow. This module was designed to build on our prior knowledge of normal physiology, anatomy, and biochemistry, and to provide a deeper understanding of disorders affecting the bone marrow. This module emphasized neoplastic proliferations of white blood cells and lymphoid tissues, as well as bone marrow failure syndromes. Through lectures, small group discussions (SGDs), and laboratory exercises, the module addressed myelodysplastic syndromes, myeloproliferative disorders, leukemias, lymphomas, and plasma cell disorders, including their molecular basis and diagnostic approaches. As a result, the following objectives were achieved: demonstrating clinical competence (PO1), leading the team (PO3), and collaboration (PO5).
EXPERIENCE
First, the lectures and laboratory exercises primarily strengthened my clinical competence (PO1) by providing a structured understanding of the pathophysiology, biochemical principles, genetic mechanisms, and clinical manifestations of hematologic disorders such as leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, and aplastic anemia, allowing me to systematically correlate clinical findings with peripheral blood, bone marrow, and biopsy results. Second, during the small group discussions, I demonstrated leadership (PO3) when I served as the group leader in one case, guiding the flow of discussion, facilitating clinical reasoning, and ensuring that all members were engaged in analyzing the case and formulating diagnostic and management plans. Lastly, collaboration (PO5) was demonstrated when I acted as the secretary in another case, where I worked closely with my groupmates by organizing key discussion points, synthesizing contributions from different members, and helping the team make our concept map.
REFLECTION
First, understanding the progression from normal hematopoiesis to malignant transformation helped me appreciate why patients present with specific signs, symptoms, and laboratory abnormalities. Interpreting peripheral blood and bone marrow findings made the diseases feel more tangible and clinically relevant rather than abstract concepts. Second, serving as a case leader during an SGD challenged me to step out of my comfort zone. I realized that leading is not about having all the answers but about facilitating productive discussion, asking the right questions, and keeping the group focused on learning objectives. Lastly, I recognize that collaboration was consistently demonstrated throughout the module, as effective case analysis required listening to different perspectives, respecting varying levels of understanding, and integrating everyone’s contributions. Personally, I learned that I work best in a supportive team environment and that clear communication greatly improves both learning efficiency and group morale.
ACTION
First, I plan to further strengthen my clinical competence by regularly reviewing hematologic algorithms for diagnosis and management, particularly for leukemias and bone marrow failure syndromes. I also aim to practice correlating laboratory findings with clinical scenarios more frequently, using case-based questions and review materials. Second, to improve my leadership skills, I intend to volunteer more often as a discussion leader in future SGDs, focusing on improving my confidence in guiding conversations while remaining open to feedback. Lastly, in terms of collaboration, I plan to be more proactive in encouraging quieter group members to participate, as inclusive teamwork enhances collective understanding. Additionally, I will work on refining my note-taking and synthesis skills to better support group outputs during discussions.
EVALUATION
Overall, I believe my attitude toward the Hematopoietic System module was positive and engaged. I approached the material with curiosity, recognizing its clinical importance despite its complexity. While I initially felt overwhelmed by the volume of information, especially the molecular aspects of hematologic malignancies, I learned to manage this by focusing on core principles and patterns. My performance as both secretary and leader highlighted areas of strength, such as organization and empathy toward teammates, as well as areas for growth, including decisiveness and time management during discussions. This module not only enhanced my knowledge of hematologic disorders but also contributed to my growth as a future physician who values competence, leadership, and collaboration in patient-centered care.
