CONTEXT
The Endocrine System module provided a clear and structured understanding of the anatomy, histology, physiology, and biochemistry of the endocrine glands and hormones. It served as a foundation for the clinical understanding of various endocrine disorders, particularly focusing on the conditions arising from hypo- and hyperfunction of these glands. As a result, the following objectives were achieved: clinical competence (PO1), effective communication (PO2), and collaboration (PO5).
EXPERIENCE
I feel that I struggled with this module. It is the end of the academic year, and my energy is not the same as it was at the beginning. The low motivation coupled with the information heavy topics were definitely a challenge for me, but I am glad that I still managed to do what I could and finish this module strong.
First, throughout the module, the structured lectures laid down a solid foundation for understanding the normal function of the endocrine system. The histological features of endocrine glands such as the thyroid were also made more tangible through pathology labs. In addition, the SGD cases were instrumental in synthesizing knowledge and applying it clinically (PO1). Second, SGDs encouraged meaningful communication (PO2). I was pushed to articulate my thoughts clearly, respectfully challenge others’ ideas, and justify my reasoning using evidence. Lastly, this dynamic environment fostered collaboration (PO5) as we divided tasks, listened to each other, and ensured our discussions were cohesive and clinically sound.
REFLECTION
First, I recognize a deepened understanding not only of the hormonal and biochemical cascades within the body but also of how delicate their balance is. Disorders such as hypothyroidism, acromegaly, and Addison’s disease are not just textbook definitions anymore. They now represent real clinical entities with complex symptoms, management challenges, and patient impact. Second, I realized how important communication is. There were times in SGD when I wanted to contribute, but my brain just felt foggy due to fatigue. Still, I did my best to stay engaged, and I realized that even simple contributions mattered. Over time, I learned how to explain things more clearly and listen more actively to my groupmates. Lastly, I learned the importance of support from others. It is the end of the year and I am grateful for my groupmates as we supported each other when things got tough, especially when everyone could sense the burnout. We reminded each other of due dates, helped divide tasks, and worked around each other's schedules when needed. I saw that collaboration is not just about sharing knowledge — it’s also about being understanding and patient with one another.
ACTION PLAN
First, I plan to improve time and energy management especially for high-volume modules. Since I struggled with low energy and motivation during this busy end-of-year period, I plan to space out my study sessions more intentionally next time. Second, I aim to take more intentional rest and emotional check-ins. One major insight I had is that exhaustion does not only come from the workload but also from a lack of intentional rest. In the next academic year, I plan to schedule regular downtime and check in with myself more often. Lastly, I aim to continue building collaborative support systems. I have seen how important peer support is, especially when motivation is running low. I plan to be more proactive in creating a healthy group dynamic — offering help, initiating study group check-ins, and sharing resources. It makes a big difference when we all feel supported and not alone in the process.
EVALUATION
The Endocrine System module was one of the more demanding parts of our curriculum, both in content and timing. Overall, I believe that I did my best given the circumstances. While I struggled with motivation and energy, I still attended lectures, participated in SGDs, and tried to stay consistent in my efforts. There were definitely days when I felt mentally exhausted and emotionally detached, but I never completely gave up. That in itself is something I am proud of. Academically, I believe I was able to meet the core objectives. Emotionally, I recognized my limitations and learned to show myself grace. I also realized how much I rely on and benefit from the support of my peers, especially when internal motivation is low. In the next modules, I aim to be more intentional with how I manage both my academics and well-being. I also hope to carry forward the collaborative spirit I experienced in this module. This module did not just teach me about hormones or diseases; it taught me about perseverance, asking for help, and doing the best I can, even when I am tired.
